First Reading Ref: Acts 3:13-15.17-19 A reading from the Acts of the Apostles Peter said to the people: You are Israelites, and it is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our ancestors, who has glorified his servant Jesus, the same Jesus you handed over and then disowned in the presence of Pilate, after Pilate had decided to release him. It was you who accused the Holy One, the Just One, you who demanded the reprieve of a murderer while you killed the prince of life. God, however, raised him from the dead, and to that fact we are the witnesses. Now I know, brothers, that neither you nor your leaders had any idea what you were really doing; this was the way God carried out what he had foretold, when he said through all his prophets that his Christ would suffer. Now you must repent and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out. This is the word of the Lord. Responsorial Psalm Lift up the light of your face on us, O Lord. 'When I call, answer me, O God of justice; from anguish you released me, have mercy and hear me! (R) It is the Lord who grants favours to those whom he loves; the Lord hears me whenever I call him. (R) 'What can bring us happiness?' Many say. Lift up the light of your face on us, O Lord. (R) I will lie down in peace and sleep comes at once, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. (R) Second Reading Ref: 1 John 2:1-5 A reading from the first letter of St. John I am writing this, my children, to stop you sinning; but if anyone should sin, we have our advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, who is just; he is the sacrifice that takes our sins away, and not only ours, but the whole world's. We can be sure that we know God only by keeping his commandments. Anyone who says, 'I know him', and does not keep his commandments, is a liar, refusing to admit the truth. But when anyone does obey what he has said, God's love comes to perfection in him. This is the word of the Lord. Gospel Ref: Luke 24:35-48 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke The disciples told their story of what had happened on the road and how they had recognised Jesus at the breaking of bread. They were still talking about all this when Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, 'Peace be with you!' In a state of alarm and fright, they thought they were seeing a ghost. But he said, 'Why are you so agitated, and why are these doubts rising in your hearts? Look at my hands and feet; yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and see for yourselves; a ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I have.' And as he said this he showed them his hands and feet. Their joy was so great that they could not believe it, and they stood dumbfounded; so he said to them, 'Have you anything here to eat?' And they offered him a piece of grilled fish, which he took and ate before their eyes. Then he told them, 'This is what I meant when I said, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, in the Prophets and in the Psalms, has to be fulfilled.' He then opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, 'So you see how it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses to this.' This is the Gospel of the Lord. May is Mary's Month For many years now with the beginning of Summer Ireland has honoured the Mother of God in a special way. The devotion can take many forms, such as the renewal of the practice of the Family Rosary in the home. This year for the first time we have the new Mysteries of Light viz. The Baptism of the Lord, the Wedding at Cana, The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God, the Transfiguration and the Institution of the Eucharist. Each child can take his/her decade. Many will have the May altar in the home, suitably decorated with Summer flowers. Others make a special effort to get to daily Mass. It's an invitation to rise above the ordinary hum-drum life that focuses only on the things of this passing world. Parents can lead by example. Reflection - The Rosary During the month of May in the Easter Season let us reflect each week on one of the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary through its Scripture Quote & through Pope John Paul II's meditation for each mystery. I look to all of you, Brothers and sisters Of every state of life, To you, Christian families, To you, the sick and elderly, And to you, young people: Confidently take up the Rosary once again. Rediscover the Rosary In the light of Scripture, In harmony with the Liturgy, And in the context of your daily lives. Pope John Paul II How To Pray the Rosary The Holy Father himself gives us guidelines on how to pray the Rosary: 1. The announcement of the mystery with the proclamation of a Biblical passage. 2. Silence. Listening and meditation are nourished by silence. 3. The 'Our Father'. In each of his mysteries, Jesus always leads us to the Father. 4. The ten "Hail Marys". The repetition of the Hail Mary in the Rosary gives us a share in God's own wonder and pleasure. 5. The Glory be. The "Gloria", the high-point of contemplation, has to be given due prominence in the Rosary. 1st Glorious The Resurrection On the first day of the week, at dawn, the women went to the tomb with the perfumes and ointments they had prepared. Two men in dazzling garments appeared beside them. In fright the women bowed to the ground. But the men said, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? You won't find him here. He is risen." Lk 24:1, 4-6 "The contemplation of Christ's face cannot stop at the image of the Crucified One. He is the Risen One!" Contemplating the Risen One, Christians rediscover the reasons for their own faith and relive the joy not only of those to whom Christ appeared - the Apostles, Mary Magdalene and the disciples on the road to Emmaus - but also the joy of Mary, who must have had an equally intense experience of the new life of her glorified Son. The Regina Caeli Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia. The Son whom you merited to bear, alleluia, has risen as He said, alleluia. Rejoice and be glad, alleluia, for the Lord has truly risen, alleluia. Let us pray: O God, who by the Resurrection of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ has brought joy to all the world, grant, we pray, that through the merits of the same Son of the Blessed Virgin Mary we may attain to the joys of everlasting life.
