The
Field of Play
1889
Whilst
evidence may prevail as to the existence of hurling in the
Cloughduv area prior to the foundation of the GAA in 1884,
the precise year of the clubs affiliation to the Cork GAA
is 1889.The first recorded encounter involving the club was
against Belgooly in the St.Finbarr's Hurling Club Tournament
of 1889, a match they won by 3-5 to 0-0.
The club made its mark on Cork GAA early on contesting the
County Minor Final of 1906 and winning the Intermediate Championship
of 1911. After this success the Club played in the Senior
Championship and whilst the Senior Championship title might
have eluded the Club they did win the Coveted Beamish Shield,
a shield presented to the County Board in late 1911 by R.H.
Beamish Esq., Alderman, City High Sheriff. Twelve clubs entered
for the Beamish Shield in 1912. Cloughduv and Redmonds qualified
for the Final, which was played in Coachford. It is reported
a very big crowd attended the game and it is said that 1000
Redmond supporters traveled to the venue by train. The half-time
score had Cloughduv in the lead by 3-1 to 1-0. The donor of
the Shield Ald. Richard Beamish threw in the ball to start
the second half and despite constant pressure by Redmonds
the men from Cloughduv held on to win by 5-2 to 2-3. The winning
team was-
Batt Foley (captain), Barry Murphy (Vice-captain),J.Barry
Murphy, J.Barry Murphy, Neil Murphy, Richard Cronin, Daniel
Foley, Daniel Buckley, Timothy Buckley, Eugene McSweeney,
Michael Downey, Thomas Richardson, Donal O'Leary.

Cloughduv played in the Senior Championship until 1927 and
in the following year amalgamated with Bride valley and played
under the name Eire Og. The amalgamated proved to be very
successful and in their very first year won the County Senior
Title. In the Final played at the Cork Athletic Grounds Eire
Og defeated Mallow by 3-2 to 2-1 before an attendance of 10,000
who paid gate receipts of £332. 17. 0. This amalgamation was
disbanded in 1936 and Cloughduv played in Junior ranks.

1940
In 1940 the Club won the County Junior Title for the first time
defeating Avondhu Champions Newtownshandrum in the Final, which
was played in Fermoy. Cloughduv won the game easily on a
scorline of 10-0 to 5-1. An interesting item from this game was
the fact that there was no trophy for the Junior County winners
at that time.
After the Junior success of 1940 Cloughduv played in the Intermediate
Championship in 1941 and in the first round overcame Brian
Dillons, who had beaten Cloughduv in the 1938 Junior County
Final, and in the semi-final defeated Ballinora at Ballincollig.
In the Final they were pitted against reigning champions Buttevant
led by County Full Back Batt Thornhill. The game was played
at the Mardyke. The sides were level at half-time Cloughduv
1-3 Buttevant 2-0.It was all Cloughduv in the second half
and at the final whistle Cloughduv were in front by 6-4 to
3-0.The winning team was: Jim Buckley, Denis Crowley, John
Barry Murphy, Jerome O'Leary, John Crowley (captain), Tomas

1984
The Club remained in the Intermediate grade after this success
and in 1984 the Centenary Year, they overcame Carrigtwohill,
Bandon, and Mallow to reach the County Final yet again but
Erin's Own defeated Cloughduv on this occasion. Two years
later Cloughduv were back in the final and this time the opposition
was again Erin's Own. Cloughduv emerged victorious on this
occasion on a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-11. Cloughduv played
in Senior ranks for the next few years but regraded to Intermediate
again after little success in the Senior grade. Cloughduv's
last appearance in the Intermediate final was in 1994 when
they met St Catherines in the final played in Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
Unfortunately Cloughduv were defeated on a scoreline of 3-12
to 2-11

The
Cloughduv of Today
Over the past number of years there has been a big revival
of hurling in the underage section of the club. A lot of hard
work has been put in over the last number of years and when
you look at the clubs record over the past 10years it shows.
Numerous Mid-Cork titles including 2 under 12 titles, 3 under
14 titles, 3 under 15 titles and 4 under 16 titles aswell
as an under 12 County title in1999 and a County under 14 Feile
na Gael title in 1997 auger well for the future of the Club.
