THE TIPPERARY WAR DEAD

Many of those who died in "World War I" simply dissappeared in the chaos of battle; some lie in unmarked graves, and others lie in War Cemeteries anonomously. This headstone marks the last resting place of a soldier known to be of the Irish regiment called "The Royal Munster Fusiliers", but whose name, rank age and birthplace are unknown. As the inscription says, his identity is only "Known unto God".

The War Graves in France, Belgium, Italy and Germany in Europe contain memorials to the dead of both the 1914-1918 War and the 1939-1945 War. Other war graves exist in Africa, The Middle East, Far East, and on islands in the Aegean Sea and Pacific Ocean. War Cemeteries only record deaths which actually occurred in battle or in field hospitals. Some war-related deaths occurred after servicemen and women had returned home to recuperate, and suffered relapses from the after-effects of injuries or trauma months or even years later. The table below gives details of Tipperary men and women whose deaths occurred as a result of their service in 'The Great War', with details of some of their graves and memorials.

The alphabetical tables may be used in several different ways to aid historical research. The tables are shown on this website in alphabetical order by surname in Column 1. However, if you copy the tables to a text program on your computer, you can then manipulate the data to find out other things, e.g. putting Column 2 into ascending alphabetical order will show all the men who died from one town or village grouped together. Doing the same to column 6 will show all those of one regiment or corps grouped together, and similarly, Column 5 can be re-arranged to show all the men of the same rank grouped together and Column 3 will group by KiA ('Killed in Action'), DoW ('Died of Wounds') and place of death. Column 4 will group all those who died on the same day. This last piece of information may be of help in finding out where a particular man died, as it can be compared with the dates of major battles as shown on the WW1 pages of this Website via the World Index.

The biographical details of the Tipperary war-dead in the tables are quoted with the author's permission from Martin O'Dwyer's excellent reference book "A Biographical Dictionary of TIPPERARY", published by Folk Village, Cashel, County Tipperary © 1999, and printed by Litho Press Company, Midleton, County Cork, Ireland. Martin is the Curator of The Folk Village, Cashel, a fascinating collection of the agricultural and domestic memorabilia of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries, which is open to the public and a major tourist attraction in the Tipperary town of Cashel. Martin has a great interest in local history, is a member of several historical societies in County Tipperary, and has written several books on local history. His Biographical Dictionary has a foreword by The MacCarthy Mor, Prince of Desmond, who is a Patron of Cashel Arts & Heritage Society. This book is recommended to anyone with an interest in the people and history of County Tipperary, Ireland.
