Above Although the MG-42 was more crudely manufactured then its predecessor it proved more reliable in harsh conditions.For this reason it was issued primarily to the infantry , while vehicle-mounted troops usually got the older weapon.The angular pressed-steel form of the MG-42 makes it easily identifiable compared to its more expensive MG 34 ancestor.The newer weapon was less temperamental when used in extreme weather.
