INTRODUCTION


This book had its origins in my youth. As a young boy I remember my father telling me about a place called Soloheadbeg. "That's where the first shots in the War of Independence were fired..............". I remember being told of Sean Treacy and Dan Breen. The seeds of this book were sown.


My father aroused my interest in this period of Irish history, but I did not research it in any detail until April 1995. While on a Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (V.T.O.S.) in the Old V.E.C. Building, Cashel, I was asked to complete a project on a subject of my own choice. As I searched for a topic I remembered Soloheadbeg, Sean Treacy and Dan Breen.


After months of intensive research I realised that the Third Tipperary Brigade was an absorbing subject. I was hooked and the more I found out the more I wanted to know. The members of the Third Tipperary
