This week's tape covers a variety of topics. We have interviews on issues such as the Rain Forest and violence against women, and composer Fr. Liam Lawton talks about the need for Celtic music in our liturgies. All this and much much more!

Side One:

1. Crossways: News in the Church and the World. The main report this week is an interview with John Kavanagh, a former Chairman of Neighbourhood Watch in Dublin. In the wake of the murders of journalist Veronica Guerin and Detective McCabe, John is calling on the people of Ireland to show the Government that we have had enough. The news is read by Liam Greene, SJ and Elaine Comerford.

2. Religious Life: Fr. Diarmuid Ó Murchú, MSC is well known for his workshops with Religious in America and Australia. He is the author of many books, his most recent one being Reframing Religious Life. In this the last interview in a series of five, Sr. Kathleen Dooris RSM asks Fr. Ó Murchú if religious life is finished.

3. Fr. Hector Turrini: is an Italian Servite who has lived among the Indian people of the Amazon forest for over forty years. He says he is witnessing the annihilation of a whole people because of the destruction of the forest. Brazilian law now permits the cutting down of half of the Amazon forest and the removal of the Indian people from their ancient home. Fr. Turrini came to Ireland recently to seek support to put pressure on the Brazilian government to reverse this process. He spoke to Alan McGuckian, SJ. Though his English is not very good he speaks with great conviction. (We enclose a copy of the letter of protest.)

4. Violence against Women:  Is violence against women in Ireland growing? Liam Greene, SJ spoke to Denise Charlton of Women's Aid about the continuing violence against women and the work of Women's Aid in fighting it.

5. Michael Cunningham: is a Tipperary man, living in Dublin. In 1967 at the age of 11, he was in a car accident that left him using a wheelchair for life. Since 1972 he has competed in six Paralympics. Michael is 41 years old and is married to Bernie. They have recently become the proud parents of a baby boy. Michael talked to Lorcan Brennan about how he came to need a wheelchair, about his new baby and what it is that keeps him going through the difficult times.

Side Two:

1. The Moral Maze:   Changes in society in recent times have lead many people to ask if we have lost our way. Often it appears that there is no morality or authority anymore. "The Moral Maze: Any Way Through?" was the title of this year's Glenstal Ecumenical Conference. The speaker on the opening night was Patrick Comerford.  Patrick is foreign desk editor of the Irish Times and a theologian and lay-reader in the Church of Ireland parish of Tallaght. Martin Browne spoke to him and asked him if modern society was in crisis.

2. Celtic Liturgy:   Fr. Liam Lawton is one of Ireland's leading composers of liturgical music.  He feels strongly that modern Christians have a lot to learn from the early Celtic church in Ireland. The Celtic ability to experience God everywhere and concern for all of creation are important influences on his music. Liam is a priest of the diocese of Kildare and Leighlin and a teacher in Knockbeg College in Carlow. His mass setting Molaise, is well known around the country and a second collection Light the Fire was launched recently.  He spoke to Martin Browne.

3. Auxiliary Ministry: The Rev. Alan Shaw is a priest, serving in the Church of Ireland diocese of Limerick and Killaloe. He's also an engineer, working in the ESB's hydroelectric generating station at Ardnacrusha! Alan is part of the Church's auxiliary ministry; a fully ordained priest, yet earning his living from his secular occupation. He explained his situation to Martin Browne.

4. Ordination: Twenty six year old Limerick man Gerry Linnane will be ordained priest on 14th July 1996. Gerry is a member of the Missionary of the Sacred Heart Order and he spoke to Lorcan Brennan about other people's attitudes to his decision to enter the priesthood. Lorcan began by asking Gerry what it was that moved him in the first place to feel he had a Vocation.

5. Lifeboat Crew:   Fr. Sean Devereux is a busy Curate near the Wexford coast. He is Vocations Director for the Diocese of Ferns and is involved in Christian Broadcasting in the South East. Fr. Devereux is also a member of the Kilmore Quay Lifeboat Crew. Lorcan Brennan asked him how he got involved at the lifeboat station and why he became a member of the crew.
