  This week we look at our existing family law system, and how the introduction of divorce would fit into it.  With Mission Sunday in mind, we have a piece on the work of Missionaries today, and we also address the difficulties currently being experienced by the Catholic Church in this country.

1. Crossways:   News in the Church and the World. Our main report this week is on the demonstration which took place outside the Central Bank and Government Buildings by those campaigning for the cancellation of Third World Debt. Liam Greene spoke to Jean Somers, co-ordinator of the campaign.  The news was read by Elaine Comerford and Liam Greene, SJ.

2. Marital Breakdown and Family Law:   How does our Family Law System work? Is it effective?  Can it be improved?  If introduced, how would divorce fit into the existing two-tier structure of our family law system?  These questions are addressed in a study commissioned by the Conference of Religious of Ireland and conducted by the ESRI.  Marie Stuart RSM talked to Tony Fahey and asked him about the findings of the study.

3. Living After a Death:  For those of us left behind after the death of a loved one, life can appear to be at an end.  For those forced to hide their grief, life can be unbearable.  Mary Paula Walsh addresses these issues and more in her book, Living after a Death.  She speaks now with Kathleen Dooris RSM.

4.  Halloween and All Saints:  Puccas, fairies, boxty and apples - do these conjure up memories of a Halloween past?  For folklorist Fr Dan Gallogly they do.  He now shares his childhood memories of Halloween and All Saints Day with Kathleen Dooris.

5. All Souls Day:  Visits to the cemetery, numerous Our Fathers and Hail Marys are all part of All Souls Day.  Fr Dan Gallogly recalls customs associated with the feast and the month of November.

Model United Nations:  The Model United Nations is sending a delegation to Croyden during the month of October.  Tanya Wilmer and Alan Brady, students of St Andrews College, Dublin, told Antoinette Harbourne what the MUN is all about.  Schools in Belfast, Limerick, Clare, Dundalk, Galway and Wicklow are among those participating.

1. The 3rd Commandment:  The 3rd Commandment tells us to Keep Holy the Sabbath Day.  For Jews it means Saturday, and for Christians it means Sunday, or does it have to be?  Judith Charry talks about the meaning of this from her Jewish perspective, and Fr Michael Drumm outlines the Catholic Church's view.  Judith is secretary at the Chief Rabbi's office, and Fr Drumm is priest of Elphin Diocese and teaches in Mater Dei Institute.

In  Sr Hannon:  "Third, remember that....................sense of who we are."  Time:  5.34

2. The 4th Commandment:  What does it mean for an adult to honour your father and your mother?  Is it relevant at all for an adult?  What about a person who was abused by their parents?  Fr Donal Harrington explores the issues around this commandment with Marie Stuart.  Fr Harrington is a priest of Dublin Diocese, and teaches in Clonliffe College and Mater Dei Institute.

3. Matt Talbot:  What's become of Matt Talbot?  Will he ever be canonised?  Pope John Paul said recently that he would love to see him canonised, but they're still waiting for the required miracle.  Aileen Asaa, PR person for the cause, talks now to Kathleen Dooris.

4. Missions Today:  Fr Brendan Cooney is the newly appointed Mission Awareness Officers of the Irish Missionary Union.  He has worked in Africa himself, and more recently has been editor of the Africa magazine.  In this piece he talks to Marie Stuart about Missionary work, and the importance of financial support for Missionaries.  Marie asked him about the nature of Missionary work today.

5. The Church in Crisis:  It seems lately that hardly a day goes by when the Church doesn't feature in the news, and a commonly-heard  phrase is "the Church is in crisis".  Martin Browne spoke to Dr Seán Mac Réamoinn about the current difficulties being experienced by the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland.  Dr Mac Réamoinn has been writing and broadcasting on church affairs for many years.
