1. Crossways: News in the Church and the World. Our main report looks at the upcoming referendum on the Bail laws, which takes place on November 28th. Bishop Eamonn Walsh expresses some of his concerns to Elaine Comerford. The news was read by Alan McGuckian, SJ, and Elaine Comerford.

2. Alcoholics Anonymous Golden Jubilee: This year the A.A. celebrates 50 years in Ireland. There have been countrywide events throughout the year and a Day of Gratitude will be held on 18th November in each of the 704 centres in 32 counties. It is hoped the 11,000 sober members will attend their local centre and give thanks for their continued sobriety. Elaine Comerford spoke to Frances, an alcoholic, about how Alcoholics Anonymous got started in Ireland in 1946, and how God fits into the plan.

3. Advent: In this piece Leo Morahan talks to Marie Stuart RSM about waiting for God through Advent. He describes it as being `ag suil le Muire' particularily in the last nine days of Advent. Leo is PP of Barna, a Mayo man, talker/listener, writer, broadcaster and deeply interested in Celtic Spirituality.

4. Advent: Donal Neary SJ is well known as an author of spiritual books and as a Retreat Director. For the last number of years he has worked as a chaplain at Mater Dei Institute in Drumcondra, Dublin. Fr. Neary's latest booklet An Advent Journey is published by Columba Press. It's very reasonably priced at 99 pence. Advent Journey invites you to journey towards Christmas with thanks, openess, awareness and yearning. The booklet is ideal for personal reading, but it will also prove useful for groups. It can be used in secondary schools or as a simple morning or evening prayer in a community or parish setting.

5. Death: the Horizon is in the Well: This is the title of the last tape in John O'Donohue's new series. We decided to send it out this week as he talks about the closeness of our friends who have died and encourages us to turn to them for help. The following are the titles in John's series of tapes; Your Solitude is Luminous (2 tapes); A Spirituality of the Senses; The Mystery of Friendship; Work a Poetics of Growth; Ageing: the Beauty of the Inner Harvest; Death: the Horizon is in the Well. 1. The Catholic Church and the Famine: As we approach the 150th anniversary of "Black 47", the historian Fr. Donal Kerr has just published a book entitiled The Catholic Church and The Famine. It is a short book, aimed at a general audience, based largely on the letters written by clergy who were ministering in the areas worst hit by the Famine. Donal Kerr is an Irish Marist priest. Formerly Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Maynooth, he is now doing research in Rome. He spoke to Martin Browne. (The Catholic Church and the Famine is published by Columba Press at £5.99 in paperback.)

2. Colm Kilcoyne, Rwanda visit: As you are probably aware Colm Kilcoyne recently visited Rwanda and Kenya. He has kindly supplied us with material fresh from his trip. In this week's piece he gives us the history of the Rwandan conflict and goes on to talk to Fr. Nicky Hennety, a member of St. Patrick's Missionary Society, about his experience of working in Rwanda and confronting the reality and consequences of the genocides.

3. Limerick Lives: While the momentum gathers for Christmas and lots of us are getting excited about shopping, parties, holidays etc. others are dreading the saddness, loneliness and pain they experience at this time of year. The Samaritans respond to this pain. Friends of the Samaritans in Limerick recently launch a 160 page hardbacked book titled Limerick Lives as a fundraiser for the Samaritans in Limerick. The book comprises of a series of light-hearted insights into the lives of 75 Limerick people, many of them well known people from sport, art, music etc. In this interview Marie Stuart RSM talked first to Catherine Slater, Director of Fundraising, about the work of the Samaritans and then to Mary Fennelly, Friends of the Samaritans about the book which is available nationwide through Easons bookshops. We are enclosing a list of the Samaritan telephone numbers around the country. Marie first asked Catherine what the Samaritans do.

4. Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS): At this time of year a lot of people come under severe financial pressure. Many look for loans and when they are not available from official financial institutions they turn to money lenders, who provide short term solutions and longterm serious difficulties in repayments at very high interest rates. In response to the ever increasing debt problem the Dept. of Social Welfare took the initiative some five years ago and set up the Money Advice and Budgeting Service, known as MABS. We are enclosing a list of the telephone numbers of all the money advice offices around the country. In this interview Liam Edwards, National Co-ordinator of MABS tells Marie Stuart RSM about the purpose and operation of the service. Marie started by asking him `What is the Money Advice and Budgeting Service?'

5. Week of the Bible: The week from November 17th to 24th is being marked this year as the Week of the Bible. This is the first time such a week has been observed by all the main Christian churches in Ireland. Susan Thom is Bible Promotions Officer with the National Bible Society of Ireland and she spoke to Martin Browne. 6. New Religious Movements: Cults or new religious movements are growing at an alarming rate. Mike Garde counsels people who are, or have been involved in such movements. Representing the four mainstream Christian Churches, he is based in the dialogue centre in Dublin. As the name of his work place might suggest, Mike does not advocate that new movements be repressed: He believes that communication and Understanding are more important. Maria O'Loughlin asked him why Ireland seems to be such fertile ground for the growth of cults.
