The Bishops will be launching a new drugs initiative at the end of April, and to tie in with this we are putting out a series of interviews on the whole issue of drugs. We start this series with an interview with addiction counsellor Tony Gheoghegan. CORI recently launched a report entitled Pathways to a Basic Income, and we have two interviews on the report. With both Mayday and the Jewish festival of Passover happening within the next two weeks, we have interviews with Frank Prendergast, former Mayor of Limerick and a member of Limerick City Council, and the newly appointed Chief Rabbi, Gavin Broder.

1.  Crossways:  News in the Church and the World. The conference of Religious of Ireland recently launched a new independent study called Pathways to a Basic Income. In our main report this week we hear from John Healy, the researcher for the study. Our reporter Mary Forrest spoke to John and asked him what basic income means.

World-Wide Refugee Crisis:  Amnesty International have recently launched a world-wide campaign to highlight a growing Refugee Crisis, and to question individual governments responses to it. Despite the welcomed Refugee Bill last year, Amnesty have concerns over our own governments response to refugees seeking asylum. Nolleen Blackwell is a solicitor, and member of Amnesty, who works with refugees seeking asylum. Andrew Lawless spoke to her about the crisis.

3.  Addiction Counsellor: The problems of drug addiction and drug related crime are seldom out of the media, but in many ways less time has been devoted to looking at the root causes of addiction, and possible treatment.  Tony Geoghegan is an addiction counsellor and assistant director of the Merchant's Quay Project in Dublin. He has had over 10 years experience in counselling people troubled by drug addiction. Tony spoke to Andrew Lawless, who started by asking him the extent of the problem.

4. Indian Caste System:  Annie Na Malla lives and works in southern India with an organisation called Progwalla. Her work involves helping the poorest people in the Indian Caste System. She is presently visiting Ireland with Christian Aid, talking about her work  to groups across the country. Craig McCauley talked to Annie and asked her to explain how the caste system affected the lives of ordinary people.

1.  Pathways to a Basic Income: Recently Professor Joe Lee launched an independent study titled Pathways to a Basic Income.  The study was commissioned by CORI and conducted by Professor Charles Clark of New York.  In this interview Mary Forrest talks to Prof. Joe Lee about the study and his view of the whole concept of Basic Income.  Joe Lee is professor of modern history at UCC and a member of Seanad Eireann.

2.  Passover :  The Jewish festival of Passover starts on Monday 21st April and lasts for 7 days. The festival marks the biblical story of the exodus of the children of Israel and their journey into the wilderness. It is a festival that brings families together. The new Chief Rabbi of Ireland, Dr Gavin Broder spoke to Andrew Lawless about the festival, and also about his hopes and aims as Chief Rabbi.

3.  Called to be a Nuisance: Called to be a Nuisance is the title of a new book by Betty Maher. Betty is married with an adult family and lives in Dublin. She is one of the many women within the Roman Catholic Church  today who feel called to'ask the awkward questions' about the way the Church treats lay people generally and women in particular. Her book poses some of these questions and chronicles some of her own joys and dissappointments. She spoke to Martin Browne.

4. Partners, Training for Transformation:  These training workshops grew out of Development Education and Leadership Programmes developed in Kenya in the seventies. They are based on the principles and methods of Paolo Freire, the great Brazilian innovator in adult education.  In this interview Marie Stuart, RSM, talked to Maureen Sheehy, who worked in Africa herself for eight years and now works full-time running training workshops with community groups.  We are enclosing a brochure on Partners Training for Transformation and one on their forthcoming Summer Workshop.  There are people all over the country who have participated in these workshops and a phone call to Maureen will get you a local contact.

5.  May Day: In this interview Frank Prendergast talks to Marie Stuart RSM about the origins of May day celebrations and the traditions associated with them. Frank is a member of Limerick city council since 1974, a former mayor of Limerick and also a former T.D..  He was a senior trade union official, loves the Irish language and is a member of the Irish place names committee.
