With Mission Sunday coming up on October 20th and new forms of missionary activity developing, we have two pieces that would be of interest to you. We also have an interview with Robert Ballagh, the subject of the winning film in the Jesuit Film and Video Awards, and much more.

1. Crossways: News in the Church and the World. In our main report Andy Pollak, Religious Correspondent of the Irish Times, tells us of the views some leading figures in the Roman Curia have of the current state of the Church in Ireland. The news was read by Alan McGuckian, SJ, and Elaine Comerford.

2. Keeping Hope Alive: Keeping Hope Alive is the title of a new book by Fr. Dermot Lane, President of the Mater Dei Institute of Education and Parish Priest of Balally in Dublin. In the book he looks at some of the big questions facing humanity: What is the point of historical existence? What happens at death? What can we hope for? In the first of two interviews, Martin Browne spoke to Fr. Lane and asked him what hope is and why the world is in need of hope at this time. (Keeping Hope Alive, by Dermot A. Lane is published by Gill and Macmillan, at £10.99 in paperback.)

3. Feast of All Souls: Fr Jackie Corkery talks to Marie Stuart, RSM, about our relationship with the Holy Souls and praying for those who have gone before us. Jackie is curate in Charleville, a poet, artist and much sought after speaker.

5. Progress, Values and Public Policy: Each Autumn the Justice Commission of the Conference of Religious of Ireland, CORI, holds a Social Policy Conference. The title of this years conference was 'Progress, Values and Public Policy', and Marie Stuart, RSM, asked Sean Healy about the key issues raised.

6. The Social Partners:  Over the past nine years we have had three National Programmes negotiated by the Social Partners. Included in the negotiations were representatives of employers, workers, farmers and the government. People who are unemployed and a number of other groups were not directly represented at the talks. Last week (Wed. October 9th) the government announced representation for these groups at the negotiations for a new National Programme which are due to start on October 24th.  Marie Stuart, RSM, asked Sean Healy who the Social Partners are, what their role is and what this change will mean.

 1 Nobel Peace Prize:  This year's joint winners of the Nobel Peace Prize were Bishop Carlos Belo, outspoken Archbishop of Dili, the capital of East Timor and Ramos-Horta, chairman of the National Council of Maubere (brotherly) Resistance. The terrible problems associated with East Timor and its people continue to be well documented before the world. The winning of the Nobel Peace Prize by two such outstanding figures will guarantee continued International help  for the complex problems in East Timor. Tom Hyland is the Co-ordinator of the East Timor, Ireland Solidarity Campaign. He spoke to Lorcan Brennan about the present situation in East Timor and about the courageous work of Bishop Belo.  2. New Mission in Rwanda:  Sr. Mary Walsh is one of an inter-congregational group heading off to work in Rwanda for the next few years.  Mary is a Mercy Sister and a native of Roscommon.  This will be her first experience working in a mission situation. The group travelling are from all parts of Ireland and is made up of Medical Missionaries of Mary, Sisters of Mercy, and members of St. Patrick's Missionary Society, Kiltegan.

Lorcan Brennan talked to Mary and asked her why she had decided to go to Rwanda at this time, and what would she miss most from her native land.

3. Jesuit Film & Video Awards:  The Overall Prize in the 1996 Jesuit Film and Video Awards went to the documentary film "Robert Ballagh". It is a highly inventive documentary which explores the historical concerns of Robert Ballagh's art. The director and winner of this year's prize of £1,000 is Michael Carolan. Michael is a history and anthropology student in Maynooth. Robert Ballagh was at the awards ceremony and spoke to Lorcan Brennan. Lorcan first asked him why he thought the producer had chosen this particular aspect of his work to explore in the film.

4. Sr. Miriam Therese O'Brien, JRS: Sr. Miriam Therese O'Brien is a St. Louis sister who works with Liberian refugees. She used to work within Liberia in a town called Banga. That all ended on the 8th of September 1994 when the town was attacked. She spoke to Alan McGuckian, SJ, about the hardships of the refugees and what is being done to support them.

 5. Charismatic Renewal: Charismatic Renewal first appeared among Irish Catholics 25 years ago. Pat Collins, CM, has been a member of the Charismatic Renewal since 1974. he will be one of the speakers at the National Charismatic Renewal Conference in the RDS in Dublin, on November 16th and 17th. He spoke to Alan McGuckian, SJ, about the charismatic experience and how it has developed in Ireland.

6. Argentina's Ecumenical Movement for Human Rights: Pat Rice is a native of Fermoy, who went to work in Argentina as a priest in 1970. During his time there he was kidnapped, tortured and expelled. After the fall of the military dictatorship he went back, married Fatima, an Argentinian, and they have three children. He works there today as director of the Argentinean Ecumenical Movement for Human Rights. When he was at home this Summer he talked to Marie Stuart, RSM, about the changing role of Human Rights Groups and the difference between being a human rights activist and living your life from a Human Rights perspective.
