This week's tape features a wide variety of items, including an interview on corporal punishment and parenting which has been so much in the news recently. We hear from Fr. Shay Cullen on his work in the Philippines and find out from Pat Rice what's happening in Argentina. Closer to home, we hear all about the Chrysalis Centre, and speak to a man who's going to bury a time capsule! All this and more.

Side One:

1. Crossways: News in the Church and the World. For 3 years a pilot scheme to create more jobs has been run throughout the country by the Conference of Religious of Ireland. The scheme has been a success, according to a report just published. Liam Greene, SJ, spoke to Fr. Sean Healy and asked him if he thought the project might create 100,000 job opportunities. The news was read by Liam Greene, SJ, and Elaine Comerford.

2. Legion of Mary 75th Anniversary: This month the Legion of Mary celebrates the seventy-fifth anniversary of its foundation by Frank Duff. With over two million members world-wide, it is one of the largest lay organisations in the Catholic Church. Finola Kennedy is an economist, writer, wife and the mother of six children. Her father was a friend of Frank Duff and she has been a member of the Legion since her teens. She told Martin Browne a bit about the Legion, how she came to join and why she remains an active legionary.

3. Corporal Punishment & Parenting:  Tasmania, Australia is one diocese, approximately the same size as Ireland with a population of under half a million. Centacare Family Services provide a range of programmes throughout the diocese on marriage, family, parenting, long and short term unemployment, violence, anger management, lone parenting, etc..Sr. Philippa Chapman, a social worker and counsellor, with experience in group work and education, is executive director of Centacare. She won National Awards in Australia in 1994 & 1995 for inovative programmes and materials which she designed. Last week she was in Ireland and Marie Stuart, RSM, asked her about the use of corporal punishment in rearing children.

4. Time Capsule:  On the 4th of October 1996, at the Church of Ireland parish of St. Andrew's in Lucan, Co. Dublin, Archbishop Walton Empey will witness the placing and sealing of a Time Capsule in the ground beside a new Parish Centre. The Time Capsule will not be opened again until the year 2021. People from all walks of life have been invited to submit written articles, poems and reflections on their vision of life in the year 2021. Fr. Brian Darcy and radio presenter Joe Duffy are but two of the many well known personalities to submit something to the project. Rev Bruce Pierce, Rector of St. Andrew's told Liam Greene, SJ, all about this novel idea.

5. Young Christian Workers: The Young Christian Workers Movement is an International movement founded in Belgium by Fr. Joseph Cardijn in 1924. In founding this movement Fr. Cardijn hoped to develop Christian Leadership skills among young adults. Today, the Young Christian Workers Movement has thousands of young people involved in its programmes across Europe, including Ireland. Vicky Rattigan is the National Development Worker for the Movement. She talked to Lorcan Brennan about the movement and about why she thinks its an excellent character building experience for young adults.

1. Argentina Today: In this interview with Marie Stuart, RSM, Pat Rice talks about conditions in Argentina today with particular focus on poverty and the decline of education and health services. This interview is a continuation of the one carried on our last tape.

2. A Listening And A Learning Church: 'The Irish Church in Dialogue' was the theme for the 20th conference and AGM of the National Conference of Priests of Ireland, which took place this week in Dublin. The keynote address was given on Monday evening by Most Revd. Seán Brady, Coadjutor Archbishop of Armagh. His address was entitled 'A Listening and a Learning Church'. Afterwards, Archbishop Brady spoke to Martin Browne.

3. Fr. Shay Cullen:  Columban Missionary, Fr. Shay Cullen, has been working in the Philippines since he was ordained in 1969. He set up the PREDA Centre in 1974 to provide much needed help to the thousands of women and children caught up in prostitution and drug abuse. Fr. Cullen was back in Ireland last week having just returned from the World Congress Against the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in Stockholm. He spoke to Elaine Comerford about the Conference and the Internet. He began by telling Elaine about the work he's involved with in the Philippines.

4. Chrysalis: Ann Maria Dunne is a remarkable woman who lives in Donard, Co. Wicklow. One of the remarkable things about Ann Maria is the fact that her home is also home to hundreds of people who come every year in search of peace, reflection and new insight into life. Ann Maria lives at the Chrysalis Centre. The Centre specialises in Residential Courses in many aspects of personal growth and spirituality. Liam Greene, SJ, asked her about the Centre, and her hopes for the future. He first asked her where the idea for naming the Centre came from.
