  This week we have several pieces for Lent, and we hear about the importance of Trócaire's work in Kenya.  We also have a piece to mark the forthcoming National Tree Week, and we are reminded about the atrocities being committed in East Timor.

Side One:

1. Crossways:  News in the Church and the World. For our main report this week we have an extract from the homily of the new Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Luciano Storero, at Mass in Dublin's Pro-Cathedral last Sunday evening. The news was read by Elaine Comerford and Liam Greene, SJ.

2. The Challenge of Lent:  "The challenge of Lent is to change", so says Fr John Keating, a Carmelite priest from Terenure College and a well-known liturgist.  In this interview with Marie Stuart RSM, he points to three areas in which we are called to change during Lent.

3. The Lenten Liturgy: The scripture readings during Lent encourage us on the journey from Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday, from the Temptations of Christ on the first Sunday of Lent to the Last Supper.  Fr John Keating, O.Carm. talked to Marie Stuart RSM about the Lenten Liturgies.

4. The Lenten Campaign: At the launch of this year's Trócaire Lenten Campaign a sad event in the life of Daniel O'Connell was re-enacted at the Mansion House in Dublin.  In this interview with Alan McGuckian SJ, Bishop Kirby, Trócaire's national president, explains why.

5. Trócaire in Kenya: Bishop Raphael Ndingi of the Nakuru diocese in Kenya was in Ireland for the launch of the Trócaire Lenten Campaign.  He spoke to Alan McGuckian SJ about the importance of Trócaire's work in his diocese.

6. Canon Law:  An international team of experts has recently published a practical guide to the canon law of the Catholic Church.  The book, entitled The Canon Law: Letter and Spirit, was compiled under the editorship of Monsignor Gerard Sheehy, who is a priest of the Diocese of Dublin and the Presiding Judge of the Dublin Regional Marriage Tribunal.  He spoke to Martin Browne.

1. Travelling Community:  Jimmy O'Connor jr is a member of the Travelling Community.  He is also a member of Harvey Point and the Irish Travellers' Movement.  For the last few years he has worked in the area of Travellers' Rights.  He shared with Lorcan Brennan some of his early memories and talked also about the importance of Faith within the Travelling Community.

2. LEVEN:  Joe Mulvaney is chairperson of LEVEN, an organisation founded in 1987 to help those ordained to the Catholic Priesthood, but who no longer exercise it in an official capacity.  The organisation is also for Religious who no longer exercise their ministry and their partners.  Lorcan Brennan spoke to Joe Mulvaney about the importance of the organisation.

3. Prayer in Spirituality:  'The Celts had a way of pushing the door of intimacy between themselves and God.'  In this interview with Marie Stuart RSM, Fr Leo Morahan talks about the close relationship between Celtic people and their God and the familiar way in which they spoke to Him.  Fr Morahan is a priest of Galway diocese, a well-known broadcaster and a lover of all things traditional and Irish.

4. Ballintubber Reflections:  Fr Frank Fahy continues his reflections.

The Well: Fr Fahey talks here about the importance of wells in the countryside and the Religious traditions that were associated with them.

5. Oak Trees:  The first week in March is National Tree Week.  Br Anthony Keane is a Benedictine Brother in Glenstal Abbey, who is well-known for his commitment to protecting our environment.  Recently he was on the Marion Finnucane Show opposing the location of a dump at Sliabh Felim in Limerick.  In this piece to mark National Tree Week he talks to Marie Stuart RSM about the nature and strength of the Oak Tree and its message.

6. East Timor:  The invasion of East Timor has been brutal: up to 200,000 people, a third of the population, have died as a result of Indonesian rule.  Joe Humphrey is part of the Irish campaign to keep the problems of East Timor before the public eye.  He told Marie Stuart RSM how he got involved, and what we can do to help.
