With the closing date of the Parish Emigration newsletter competition in February, we have a special piece on emigration with Fr. Brian Darcy. Also as we approach February we have pieces both on Candlemas  and St. Brigid. Anthony Clare gave us a special phone interview on the topic of art and insanity, and Patrick Riordan, SJ, spoke to us about the launch of his latest book, The Politics of the Common Good.

1. Crossways: News in the Church and the World. In our main interview this week, we hear from Maura Mathews, Asst. Regional Director of Concern for the Horn and Central Africa, following the recent attack on aid workers in Rwanda. The news is read by Alan McGuckian, SJ, and Elaine Comerford.

2.  Emigration:  Fr Brian Darcy is a well known broadcaster and journalist. He is also a man who has met Irish emigrants in many parts of the world. At one stage in his own ministry Fr Brian was an emigrant himself. He talked to Alan McGuckian, SJ, about his experience of emigration and of how important a Parish Emigrant Newsletter would be for those far from their own communities.

3. John Moriarty:   John Moriarty is a well known writer, mystic, speaker and broadcaster.  In this first of a number of pieces with Marie Stuart RSM he talks about where he is living and why he chose to live there. John has a book published titled `Dreamtime' and he is in the process of writing another.  He also has three sets of tapes available.

4. Rural Development:  Joe Mannion is Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at U.C.D.  Recently he addressed a conference on the topic of Issues and Policies for Balanced Rural Development.  In this interview, the first of two pieces he talked to Mary Forrest about his own interest in Rural Development and why he believes it is important to provide the infrastructure, employment and services which will facilitate people to live in rural areas.

5. Ageing: The Harvest is in the Well:  This is the fifth topic covered by John O'Donohue in his series of tapes.  In this interview with Marie Stuart, RSM, he suggested that ageing is a time of gathering the fragments of life, when the Soul is getting richer and the memory deeper.  He went on to describe a second aspect of ageing.

6. Brigid: Anne F. Kelly reads her own poem, ‘Brigid’.  Anne teaches in the Religious Studies department at St. Patrick’s College in Drumcondra.  The poem was originally a Confirmation gift for a friend who was taking the name Brigid for Confirmation and had asked Anne to be her sponsor. She wrote the poem in an attempt to rediscover some of the forgotten and overshadowed aspects of the woman we know as St. Brigid.  The music used in this piece is ‘Light the Fire’, by Liam Lawton, and is used with permission.  [In case you need to log music played:  The track is by Liam Lawton; taken from the album also called ‘Light the Fire’; on the Veritas label LTFCD2.]

1. Politics of the Common Good:  Patrick Riordan, SJ, is the Dean of Philosophy at the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy.  He recently published a book entitled  The politics of the common good. Peter Scally met Fr. Patrick and asked him why he wrote the book.

2. Candlemas: February 2nd, the fortieth day after Christmas, is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple.  The feast, commemorating Simeon’s recognition that the child Jesus would be the light of all nations, is celebrated with the blessing of candles and candlelight processions and is popularly known as Candlemas. The Very Revd. John Paterson, Dean of Christchurch Cathedral in Dublin, provides a reflection on the meaning of the Feast.

3. Anthony Clare: On Wednesday 29th January, Professor Anthony Clare, Medical Director of St. Patrick's Hospital in Dublin, will deliver a talk on the theme 'The Artist and Insanity'. In his talk which is part of a series of lectures on James Joyce, Professor Clare will explore the life of Lucia Joyce who suffered from schizophrenia. Lorcan Brennan asked Professor Clare how would he approach his subject and if there is such a thing as 'artistic temperament'.

4. The Irish Heart Foundation:  The Irish Heart Foundation has its headquarters in Dublin but is active in all parts of the country through its Happy Heart Community Groups, and CPR Training (CPR - Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, a technique which may save life in the event of a cardiac arrest. Maureen Mulvihill is responsible for Health Promotion and Education for the organisation. Lorcan Brennan talked to Maureen about the Heart Foundation and asked her if Ireland is changing its eating habits?

5.  The Storykeepers:  A new Biblical animation series is taking the world by storm. The Storykeepers follows the adventures of four children on the run from persecution in Rome in 64 A.D. The children take shelter with a Jewish Christian baker Ben, and his wife. Rev. Brian Brown and Jimmy Murakami are directly involved with the production of The Storykeepers. Brian told Lorcan Brennan where the idea for the successful series came from.
