This week we have three pieces to mark Advent, and we have the last two in the series on the Commandments.  We also mark the forthcoming canonisation of Eugene de Mazenod, OMI and the recent assassination of Israeli Prime, Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

Side One:

1. Crossways:   News in the Church and the World. For our main report this week Liam Greene, SJ asked Church Historian, Fr Fergus O'Donoghue just what is a Papal Nuncio and what is his role in Ireland.  The news was read by Elaine Comerford and Liam Greene, SJ.

Time: 7.02

2. Rabin Assassination:   Many people's thoughts turn to the Holy Land around Christmas time.  Tragically, the place where Jesus was born has long been torn apart by war.  This was highlighted by the murder earlier this month of the Prime Minister of Israel, Yitzhak Rabin.  At a memorial service held in Dublin recently, Martin Browne spoke to Judith Charry from the Chief Rabbi's office about Mr Rabin and his work for peace.  This report also includes part of the address given at the service by the Ambassador of Israel, His Excellency, Zvi Gabay.

In  Browne:  "Jews throughout the world........music fades out."    Time: 6.57

3. Death Row - Patricia McKenna, M.E.P.:  In the USA 38 States actively implement the death penalty.  Under the Clinton administration, over 50 new offences have been added to which the penalty could apply.
It disappeared completely off the Irish Statute books in the Summer of 1994.  Where it still appears on the Statue books in Europe, it's very seldom implemented.  What can the European Parliament do about the death penalty in America?  Ann Kennedy spoke to Patricia McKenna.

In   McKenna:   "Well, first the European......................do this on people."  Time:  7.35

4.  Prisoners and the Peace Process:  Last week, when a number of prisoners were released in Northern Ireland, we heard representatives of paramilitary organisations say the British Government would have to do more.  At the same time, families of victims of violence were expressing anger that people who killed were being released from prison.  In this interview Nuala Kelly identifies some of the issues related to the question of prisoners in the context of the Northern Ireland peace process.  Nuala is co-ordinator of the Irish Commission for Prisoners Overseas.

In   Kelly:   "The question of prisoners.............................countries as well."   Time:  6.39

 5. Eugene de Mazenod:    The founder of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, Bishop Eugene de Mazenod, will be canonised on December 3rd coming.  Hilda Carroll asked Fr Denis Burke, OMI what was so special about this man, and what will his canonisation mean for his followers.  Fr Burke gives retreats and missions with the Oblate Fathers.

In   Carroll:  "Fr Burke............................in helping the poor."    Time:  2.11

Side Two:

1. Life as an Oblate:  Longford priest, Fr Anthony Bissett OMI is an Oblate missionary working in Brazil.  While home on a recent visit, Margaret Heavey of WLR interviewed him about his work amongst the poor in Brazil.  First Margaret asked him and about his reasons for joining the Oblates.

In  Bissett:  "Well, I met them....................................enables us to continue."  Time:  4.57

2. Advent and Preparation for Christmas:   Blowing horns, whitewashing the house, darning the thatch.... Folklorist Fr Dan Gallogly reminds us now of Advent and the lead-up to Christmas in by-gone days.  He was interviewed by Kathleen Dooris RSM.

In Gallogly:  "Well, bar the....................................traditions are imported."  Time:  4.55

4.  Advent Liturgy:  Fr Eltin Griffin is a Carmelite priest who is a well-known liturgist, retreat giver and author of many articles, homilies etc.  In this interview he talks to Marie Stuart RSM about Advent, its meaning and its liturgy.

In  Griffin:  "Advent means.....................at Christmas time."    Time:  3.53

5. 9th & 10th Commandments:  Fr Patrick Hannon is Professor of Moral Theology at St Patrick's College, Maynooth, and author of Church, State, Morality & Law (Gill & Macmillan, 1992), and Knowing Right from Wrong (Veritas, 1995).  Here he talks to Marie Stuart RSM about the attitude called for in the Ninth and Tenth Commandments.  As usual Sr Anne Hannon RSM reads the commandment at the beginning of each piece.
