We have seasonal pieces relating to Samhain, the Feast of All Saints, and November and the Holy Souls on this 3R tape. We have a special interview with management guru and best selling author Charles Handy. Nóirín Ní Riain talks to us about her music and sings for us, and we also have a piece on the spiritual side of Oscar Wilde. Recently Church Leaders from all the major religions came together in Dublin to highlight the ongoing refugee issue, and we have an interview with one of the organisers.

1. Crossways: News in the Church and the World. A revised religious education programme for 5 and 6 year olds was launched recently in Belfast. Since then news reports have stated that the Catholic Church have banished the words Mammy and Daddy. In our main report we hear from the author of the programme, Maura Hyland. She tells us the kind of things that are covered in the programme, and clarifies matters for us. The news was read by Elaine Comerford.

2 Feast of all Saints: Canon Michael Liston, St Munchin’s, Limerick reflects on the idea of the Communion of Saints, the feast of all Saints and the people we have known that are now saints. He was talking to Marie Stuart, RSM.

3. November and the Holy Souls: Canon Michael Liston, St. Munchin’s, Limerick talks to Marie Stuart, RSM, about our relationships with those who have died, praying for the dead, purgatory and the all flowing love of God.

4. Samhain: Samhain is one of the most important festivals in the Celtic calendar. The word literally means the end of summer, but it has a strong spiritual significance too. Fr. John Joe Spring, a lecturer at All Hallows College in Dublin is currently researching the relationship between Celtic Spirituality and Christianity. Maria O'Loughlin asked him what Samhain is all about.

5. In Paradisium: For Nóirín Ní Riain music can express emotions that cannot be put into words. In this short reflection for the month of November she talks about music and journeys, in particular the final journey of life. She concludes by singing the funeral chant 'In Paradisium'.

1. The Hungry Spirit: "As all the traditional structures disappear, we all inevitably become responsible for ourselves, more completely than ever before. We are condemned to be free", so says Charles Handy in his personal preface to his new book `The Hungry Spirit’. Here he considers the current state of capitalism, personal responsibility and the kind of society we want to create as we move into the new century and the new millennium. Charles is a well-known writer in business and organisational management, The Empty Raincoat being one of his best known books. He is heard regularly on the BBC. In this interview he talks to Marie Stuart, RSM, about his own life and his concerns for society today.

2. Oscar Wilde: We all know Oscar Wilde for his sharp wit, his farcical plays, and the scandal of his life, but there was a deeper side to the writer. There are many biographies and now even a major film on the writer's life, but are they missing the moral, spiritual and christian side to Oscar Wilde? Andrew Lawless recently spoke to David Rose, director of the Oscar Wilde Autumn School about the Christian side of this troubled writer. He first asked Mr Rose what relevance Oscar Wilde has today.

3 The Liss Ard Foundation: Just outside Skibbereen in West Cork lies forty acres of garden with a difference. Veith Turske, who founded the gardens, set out to establish a truly Irish garden, ecologically landscaped and planned to allow people access to the different areas of the garden with minimum disruption to the plant, animal and bird life. The garden is a place to lose oneself and meditate. It is a place to contemplate the wonders of nature and man’s relation to nature. Brian Hennessy, General Manager of Liss Ard, told Marie Stuart, RSM, about the gardens, their spirit and their purpose.

4. Voices for Refugees: The refugee issue is a moral issue for everyone. This was the message from the recent Voices for Refugees event held in Kilmainham Gaol. Reading from their own traditions church leaders from all the major religions gave an account on the theme of flight and exile. Amongst the participants were the Most Reverend Walton Empey, Bishop Raymond Field, Imam Yahya M. Al-Hussein, and Chief Rabbi Gavin Broder. Andrew Lawless spoke to Jim Loughran, development officer of Amnesty, and asked him first to describe the aim of the event.
