Tape Date: 4th March 1998

On this tape Archbishop Kelly of Liverpool tells us how the Christian message is more about transforming things and working through them, than about 'magic' solutions. Fr. Paul Andrews talks to us about guilt and tells us what it is. We hear all about St. Patrick from Fr. Jim McCormick, CM, a lecturer in Church History.

Side 1

1. Crossways: News in the Church and the World. Actor and comedian Dermot Morgan who died so unexpectedly last week will be remembered for sending up the ‘great and the good’ and particularly priests. Some Catholics felt that he was too hard on the Church. In our main report we hear from Fr. Michael Paul Gallagher who was a friend of Dermot’s for many yeras. The news was read by Alan McGuckian, SJ, and Elaine Comerford.

2. Stones Into Loaves: One of the Gospel stories we hear during Lent tells of how Jesus resisted Satan's temptation to turn the stones around him into loaves of bread while he was fasting in the desert. It is probably true to say that a lot of us tend to view religion and faith in terms of that same kind of wonder-working and problem-solving. Archbishop Patrick Kelly of Liverpool holds however, that the Christian message is a lot more about transforming things and working through them, than about 'magic' solutions. He warns us all to resist the temptation to try to turn stones into loaves of bread. He spoke to Martin Browne.

Opening their annual conference last weekend President Mary McAleese referred to the way Cura has changed and adapted over the past twenty-five years. Marie Stuart RSM talked to Charlotte Keery, Cura PRO, about the work of Cura, the people who work with them and how a person would go about volunteering to help.

4. Faces In The Stone: Hildegard of Bingen lived in the Rhine Valley in Germany 900 years ago. As a Benedictine Sister she wrote about relationships with God, the environment and what she called the feminine face of God. Inspired by her work and influenced by the teaching of Mary and Brigid, a group from Portland, Maine, known as Veronica Sacred Theatre developed a mystery play titled Faces in the Stone. They are coming to Kildare to perform the play on Sunday March 22nd. Marie Stuart, RSM, talked to Mary Minihan about Hildegard's spirituality and about the play.

Marie Stuart, RSM, asked Paul Andrews, SJ, about it and discovered that it's a feeling, some of us get attached to our guilt and basically its a burden we would be well rid of. 5. A New View of the World: How do you see the world? Where did it come from? What is it for? Up to recently we tended to see it as being there for our use. All its gifts were for us, to use as we pleased. As we advanced technologically we became better able to exploit the earth, but is this a good thing? Miriam Therese McGillis, OP, (Dominican Sister) believes that we need to change our understanding of the earth and its origins. Marie Stuart, RSM, talked to her about the land, pollution and the hope she sees for the future. Miriam is based at Genesis Farm, New Jersey. Based on a new view of the origins and nature of the earth, they practice community supported organic agriculture. Genesis Farm is one of 600 such farms in the North Eastern region of the USA. Similar farms are being set up in Ireland at present.
