As we approach Lent we have a number of pieces with a Lenten theme on this 3R tape. Fr Paul Andrews spoke to us about the spiritual significance of fasting, while Victor Wheatley gave us his recollections about Lent over the years. We have an interview with Fr. Barney McGuckian, SJ, on Temperance Sunday (9th Feb.) and an interview with Archbishop Walton Empey looking back at his first year in office. We also have a piece on the newly accepted social agreement 'Partnership 2,000'. Also, as we hear of more missionaries being murdered around the world, we have an interview with the Irish Provincial of the White Fathers paying tribute to the heroism of missionaries throughout the world.

1. Crossways: News in the Church and the World. Following the murder of a Canadian White Father in Rwanda, we hear from the Irish Provincial of the White Fathers, Fr Kevin O'Mahony. Fr O'Mahony begins our main report by paying tribute to the heroism of many ordinary people  who are caught up in a situation which is not of their own making. The news was read by Alan McGuckian, SJ, and Elaine Comerford.

2. Lent: Victor Wheatley is a retired Church of Ireland school teacher who is very actively involved in many community projects. Victor has always had a deep love of scripture and a keen sense of the Churches Seasons. Recently Victor talked to Lorcan Brennan about his memories of the season of Lent and about how his understanding of the season has developed across the years.

3. Fasting : Lent is upon us once more. It's a time when we expect priests to talk to us about the dreaded concept of abstinence. But Paul Andrews, SJ, is not your average priest. This consultant psychotherapist, lecturer, and writer, spoke to Maria O'Loughlin about the cultural and spiritual significance of fasting. Paul believes that fasting is a lot more than just giving up sweets, so she asked him to define it.

4. Sunday Readings in Lent:  The Churches are always asking people to reflect on the Sunday readings before coming to church on Sunday, but doing so can often be a daunting task. Fr Pat Rogers, CP is a member of the passionist community at Mount Argus in Dublin and is head of the Scripture department at the Milltown Institute. He gave Martin Browne some pointers on getting to know the Sunday readings for Lent.

5. Temperance Sunday: Over the years the Pioneer Movement has had a remarkable effect on the lives of individuals and communities. Fr Barney McGuckian, SJ, is director of the Pioneer Movement in Ireland and has travelled extensively promoting the concept of temperance. This year for Temperance Sunday (9th Feb.) the Pioneer Movement are inviting people to take a short term pledge for the season of Lent. Fr Barney talked to Lorcan Brennan about his initiative and about the Pioneer Movement.

6. Partnership 2,000:  Partnership 2,000 is the new national partnership programme negotiated between the four main social partners, to cover the next three years. CORI's justice commission was involved in the negotiations for the agreement, which involved the voluntary and community sector for the first time. Fr Sean Healy spoke to Andrew Lawless about the agreement, voicing his disappointment with certain aspects of the programme, whilst recognising its achievements. Andrew first asked him whether this plan could achieve what it had set out to do.

1. Archbishop Walton Empey:  It's nearly a year since Archbishop Walton Empey took over in his new responsibilities. It has been a time of change and new challenge for him and those close to him. Recently  Andrew Lawless met Archbishop Empey. He first asked him how was he settling into his new task. Archbishop Empey also talked about the importance of the Churches commitment to Christian Unity, especially as we move into a new millennium.

2. Inter-Church Christians:  'Inter-Church Christians - Beyond Ecumenism' was the title of a lecture given in Trinity College Dublin recently by Professor Enda McDonagh. In it, he suggested that Christians need to 'inhabit' more than one religious tradition and need to breathe in God through the nostrils of another tradition along with their own. Father Enda  is a Professor Emeritus of Moral Theology at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth and is currently President of the National Conference of Priests of Ireland. He spoke to Martin Browne.

4. Reach Out And Be A Good Neighbour: On Wednesday 15th January the Reach Out: Good Neighbour Awards were launched at Dublin's Mansion House by the Minister for Housing, Ms Liz McManus T.D. The Awards, which are sponsored by Irish Life Home Service, are run by the Reach Out Campaign which is supported by local authorities, health boards, and voluntary bodies around the country. Ronan Morris is one of the co-ordinators of the Awards, he spoke to Lorcan Brennan who first asked him about the background to the campaign.

5. Carmelite Travel: For those who seek spiritual enlightenment, Pilgrimage has long played an important role in faith discovery and development. Carmelite Travel on Aungier St. in Dublin is responsible for bringing people from all corners of Ireland to well known pilgrim sites around the world. Pilgrim Co-ordinator Peadar Clarke talked to Lorcan Brennan about Carmelite Travel and told him how the money raised through its work is used to help important projects in poorer parts of the globe.

6. CLC: Christian Life Communities are small groups of people who gather together once a week to support one another in living a Christian lifestyle. At the moment there are groups in both Dublin and Limerick. Members of these groups pray, talk, and socialise together. Jesuit pries Rory Halpin is the co-ordinator of the young adult section. Maria O'Loughlin asked him what Christian Life Communities are all about.
