This tape, as usual, has a wide variety of topics covered. With Mother's Day approaching, we have an item on Motherhood. Michael Drumm speaks to us about St. Patrick, and we have an item on Lent. Current news issues are also covered, such as Genetic Engineering, the Education Bill and the Internet and Pornography. I hope you enjoy this tape.

1. Crossways: News in the Church and the World. On the day divorce became law in Ireland, Accord, the Catholic Marriage Counselling Service, urged the Government to introduce a media campaign to highlight the importance of marriage preparation courses. In our main report, Elaine Comerford asks why they have asked for this. The news was read by Alan McGuckian, SJ, and Elaine Comerford.

2. Women's World Day of Prayer: The first Friday of March is traditionally associated with Women's World Day of Prayer. The first services were held in Ireland back in 1934. Since then, Women's World Day of Prayer has developed into a prayerful meeting of Christian Traditions everywhere. Dolores Flynn is one of the co-ordinators for the Prayer Day, she talked to Lorcan Brennan about Mary Ellen James, who first thought up the idea, and about how significant it is for Christians to pray together as we move towards a new millennium.

3. Lent: In this interview Teresa Clements, D.M.J.(pronounced Clemens) talks about approaching Lent through the suffering peoples of the world. She suggests that spending time before the Lord each day listening to what He is asking of us is an alternative to our traditional approach of  'giving up something'. Teresa is a member fo the Daughters of Mary and Joseph. She holds a doctorate in theology from the Gregorian University, Rome. She has taught theology in Africa, Rome and in the Milltown Institute, Dublin. She is Provincial in her own Congregation and is the President of the Conference of Religious of England and Wales.

4. Importance of Religion Lessons: Niamh Middleton is a teacher who believes that even teachers who object (on ideological grounds to teaching religion within primary schools) cannot deny the value of the religion lesson to pupils in helping them to live moral and responsible lives. Lorcan Brennan asked Niamh if there was room for a teacher to refuse to teach RE on ideological grounds, and if teachers get enough in-service training to work well in a changing world?

5. Motherhood:  Mother's Day is approaching and is celebrated on March the 9th. Becoming a mother brings responsibility and a wide variety of emotions and feelings. First time mother Grainne Mooney, from Enniscrone, Co. Sligo, shared some of her emotions with Elaine Comerford. She began by telling Elaine how she felt when she first found out she was pregnant.

6. Genetic Engineering: Last week, the news that scientists had successfully cloned a Scottish sheep called Dolly sent shockwaves around the world. Since then, the question on everyone's lips has been: "When are they going to start on humans?"  Maria O'Loughlin asked Fr. David Smith, a moral theology lecturer at the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy, just why Dolly is such big news.

1. Education Bill: Sr. Teresa McCormack is Director of the Education Office for the Conference of Religious of Ireland. In its published response to the Government's Education Bill, CORI "welcomed the publication of the education legislation as a much needed restructuring of the education system." For the past five years CORI have been involved in extensive consultation in an effort to give shape to the Bill. Unfortunately, they now feel "there are many of the aspects of the Bill where the consultation process is not reflected." Sr. Theresa McCormack spoke to Lorcan Brennan. 2. Jesuit Refugee Services: Sr. Noelle Corscadden, IBVM, a native of Kilcock, was one of six Loreto Sisters who responded to the refugee crisis in Rwanda following the genocide in that country. She worked in Tanzania for two years with Jesuit Refugee Services in camps near the border with Rwanda. She spoke to Alan McGuckian, SJ about the experience.

3. St. Therese, the Girl, the Woman, the Saint: The Centenary Congress for the death of St. Therese of Liseux has been taking place in Avila retreat centre in Dublin this week (Mar. 3rd - 7th).  Teresa Clements D.M.J. addressed the conference and in this interview she talks to Marie Stuart, RSM,  about the kind of person St Therese of Liseux was.

4. Michael Drumm, St. Patrick: Michael Drumm speaks to Marie Stuart, RSM, about the fact that St. Patrick definitely existed, was a humble man who was not well educated. He also talks of St. Patrick as a man who had a great trust in God who attributed anything he achieved to the work of God. Michael quotes from St Patrick's Confessions

5. Burmese Prime Minister in Exile: Dr. Sein Win, (pronounced Sing), was elected Prime Minister of Burma in 1990, but he has since been prevented from taking office by the actions of the Burmese military. Dr. Win is currently in Ireland to meet with the Tanaiste and members of the Joint Committee for Foreign Affairs. Burma is a country in which democracy has been smashed and the general population shackled. Dr. Win spoke to Alan McGuckian, SJ, about his country and how he came to be in the situation he is in.

6. The Internet and Child Pornography:   The Government have recently announced details of proposed amendments to the 1996 Children's Bill aimed at curbing the spread of child pornography, and focusing in particular on the use of the Internet for this purpose. Dr. Ger Moane of the Psychology Dept. in UCD has worked in the area of Pornography for the last 15 years, studying the effects of pornography on society in general. Andrew Lawless spoke to her recently about the issues surrounding Child Pornography. He started by asking her to actually define child pornography.
