CONGRATULATIONS GIRLS

SUPERB ABBEYDORNEY WIN ALL IRELAND TITLE
(Irish Examiner Report)
Abbeydorney 5-9 / Inniskeen (Monaghan) 3-8

A Two goal salvo in a minute from Kerry senior star Noreen Fealy was enough to see off the challenge of Monaghan side Inniskeen and hand Kerry's Abbeydorney their first All-Ireland Ladies' Junior football title. Fealy was a constant thorn in the side of the Ulster team and she deservedly claimed the player of the match award after scoring 3-6 in a virtuoso performance in Birr yesterday. Overall Abbeydorney were the better team but at times they made hard work of seeing off a well-disciplined Inniskeen team who had their own sharpshooter in Voureen Quigley who scored 2-2. Fealy put the Kerry team into the lead after 30 seconds but Quigley goaled for Inniskeen in the fifth minute and for the rest of the half the match was finely balanced. Fealy grabbed her first goal a minute later and Abbeydorney were quickly into a 1-3 to 1-0 lead but Quigley found the net again in the 24th minute. Lisa Brick scored Abbeydorney's second goal in first half injury-time to level the match at 2-4 apiece at the break. Denise Shanahan put the Munster champions back in front two minutes after the restart. A brace of points from Fealy and another from Yvonne McElligott put them 2-8 to 2-4 in front and then Abbeydorney put the result beyond doubt in a scintillating five-minute period. Sinead Bunyan's goal put them six points clear and then Felay drifted out to the wing and gathered possession and bore down on goal before finishing past a helpless Karen Quigley in goal. Shanahan then fielded the kickout and put Fealy through immediately for a replica goal and suddenly Abbeydorney were clear at 5-8 to 2-5 with ten minutes remaining. From then on Inniskeen were playing for pride and they responded with points from Rachel Rice and Katherine Byrne (two) and a late goal from Carol McGahan, but Abbeydorney were already celebrating their first All-Ireland title and dreaming of the 2005 Intermediate Championship. Scorers; Abbeydorney; N Fealy (3-6, 0-3f), L Brick and S Bunyan (1-0 each), D Shanahan, Y McElligott and M Leen (0-1 each). Team; E Ryall, B Slattery, H McKenna, C O'Connor, D O'Mahony, C Sexton, C Concannon, E O'Connell, D Shanahan, L O'Mahony, Y McElligott, M Leen, S Bunyan, N Fealy, L Brick. Subs; C Collins for S Bunyan, M Roche for E Ryall.

19/11/2004
Here is a letter from today’s edition of The Irish Times Newspaper submitted by Peter Murray, Abbeydorney.

The Ombudsman’s observations
Madam, - Emily O’Reilly spoke recently of Ireland’s modern plight, of our rush for instant gratification, our loss of delayed gratification (The Irish Times, November 6th). Nothing gives me greater pleasure here in my bucolic idyll than to listen to the early morning radio programmes detailing the traffic chaos on all the approach roads to Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick. But my smugness is dimmed by a genuine sympathy for the poor souls sitting in these traffic jams in the certain knowledge that the experience will recur ad infinitum.
Ms. O’Reilly discussed the many faults of modern Ireland, including public obscenity, drunkenness, casual violence, the rise of talent less celebrities, 24-hour shopping, inappropriately bared midriffs and so-called reality TV.
RTE recently replaced a harmless afternoon programme called Open House with a brain-dead, all-female The Afternoon Show, which has stooped to new lows in banality. It would be difficult to lower the intelligence level set by The Late Late Show but RTE has succeeded in doing so. People have become incapable of intelligent thought, of making independent choices. “red-tops”, the mind-numbing British tabloids, have gained an increased readership in this country through a diet of sleaze and sex. We are allowing the gutter press and media to control our lives.
The number of SUV’s on our roads has increased exponentially with the spiralling cost of petrol. With fossil fuels running out, the purchasers of such vehicles seem intent of a madcap rush to the precipice. The ignorance of their driving, their lack of manners, their sheer effrontery is typical of modern Irish society. We have lost our core values of civility, modesty, decency and respect for others. They have been replaced by a child-like display of newfound wealth and a total disregard for the susceptibilities of others.
Newly-weds today follow the Credit Union financed wedding and Caribbean honeymoon by moving into a fully furnished house. They have nothing to look forward to but a life of constant work to pay off the debt and the increased likelihood of an early divorce. People have forgotten the treasure of growing together, of personal development, of the satisfaction of shared self-attainment.
Christmas is almost upon us – the season when the obscenity of the Celtic Tiger reaches its zenith. If we don’t pull back from this headlong rush towards hedonism, we will surely reap the whirlwind. It is time to shout stop before it is too late. – Yours, etc.,
PETER MURRAY,
Abbeydorney,
Co. Kerry.

Parish Hall / Community Centre
Work on the extension and refurbishment of the Parish Hall / Community Centre commenced in May 2000 and is now nearing completion.
The building work was undertaken by Fas with Michael McElligott from Kilflynn as foreman.
Total cost will be approx €500,000.
To-date, new stage areas, dressing rooms, toilets, meeting rooms and offices have been built.
A medical centre with a doctor and nurse in attendance and an office for the AbbeyFlynn family resource group have also been added.
A playschool for children aged from 3 to 5 years has been built and later a launderette will be added.
Work on replacing the floor and other improvements in the main hall are now almost complete.
Denis O'Connor and his committee along with foreman Michael and all his team must be congratulated on an excellent job. Needless to say, without funds this work would not be possible and in a small community such as ours, raising the large amount of money needed can be quite an arduous task. If you would like to contribute to the on-going fundraising (Euro 70,000 needed to finish the work ) , please do participate in our new Weekly Lotto Draw which will commence in the coming weeks.
