Directed by Henry Selick (1993).
'Nightmare' is a superbly animated story, using stop-motion techniques which can appeal to both children and
adults. The main character is Jack Skellington, a skeleton no less, who is the Pumpkin King
of Halloween Town, a place where it's always either Halloween or where everyone is getting
ready for the next Halloween. One day Jack walks a little too far out from town and comes
across a glade where each tree has the symbol of a holiday event on it like Easter, Halloween
and Christmas. Attracted by the mysterious shiny symbol of the Christmas tree Jack investigates
and finds himself transported to Christmas Town, a place he has never seen before. In this
new place everything is colourful and cheerful and the people are nice to each other unlike
the people of Halloween Town who, as their characters' dictate behave like children on Halloween
Night. Jack is captivated by the idea of Christmas and on his return to Halloween Town he calls a town
meeting where he tells of this wonderous place and his plans to take over Christmas next time
around. Endlessly inventive, with marvelous songs and grotesque characters The Nightmare Before
Christmas is an astonishing piece of cinema. The humour is at times perhaps a little too black
for some younger viewers but this film will amaze any film enthusiast.
