LYNDA COOKSON

Lynda was born in Durban (South Africa) in 1954. She has travelled widely throughout Southern Africa, including Mozambique, Swaziland, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Namibia. 1974 saw her camping around Britain and Europe with three other South Africans. Her adult life has taken her to live in many different places including Durban, Pietermaritzburg and the Drakensburg Mountains (all in Kwa-Zulu Natal), Pretoria (in Gauteng), Cape Town and Greyton (in the Western Cape), and finally Oughterard, at the Gateway to Connemara in the West of Ireland, where she has finally settled with her husband Alan.

Lynda is a self-taught artist who has always been involved in the creative aspects of life, whether music, theatre, dance, writing or visual arts. Eventually, when her two little birds (Meghan and Gary) had finally flown the nest, she was able to make more time for painting, and to begin to let her handmade paper making business take a back seat.

Acrylic is her medium of choice, and she likes to experiment with different textures, such as hessian, in her choice of support. Watercolour remains a challenge. Lynda believes it is like a cat, constantly reminding her of who the boss is!

The warm and strong colours of Africa still influence Lynda's work. Her move to Ireland has been a challenge to her painting, one that has made her aware of colour even more, and to look at it with a deeper appreciation.
