Sligo County Council is a Local Authority, responsible for the delivery of a wide range of infrastructure, social and community services in County Sligo, excluding the Borough of Sligo. The County population of 55,645 is represented by 25 democratically elected members, drawn from 5 electoral areas within the County. The function of the elected members relate mainly to decisions on important matters of policy and finance, while the implementation and administration of County policy is vested in the County Manager.

Sligo Council of Trade Unions held their first meeting in 1890 chaired by Patrick J. Farrell (Bakers Union). It was a successor of an earlier "Union" started in 1883 from among the "Artisans Society", an organisation of unknown origins. Records of the Sligo branch of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners are dated to 1871 and memorabilia of the trade union participation in the O'Connell centenary celebrations of 1875 are in the Sligo Museum.

Co. Sligo Leader Partnership Co. Ltd., Attempts to include Co. Sligo under the LEADER II & Local Development Programme's had been ongoing in stops and starts since 1991. Since then a group of community activists and interested individuals have been steadily working in order to bring the two above mentioned programmes to Co. Sligo. The Company were successful in securing both LEADER II and the second round of LDP funding for County Sligo in 1994 and 1995 respectively. The joint company is now known as the Co. Sligo LEADER Partnership Co. Ltd.
