History of Sligo Arts Festival

Sligo Arts Festival was founded in 1985, so 1999 is our 15th annual Festival.

It is a broad, community based, multi-disciplinary festival, incorporating the best of music, theatre, arts, street entertainment and fringe events.

Sligo Arts Festival takes place at many venues throughout the town, including the Hawkswell Theatre, The Model Arts Centre, Sligo Art Gallery, The Tower Hotel, The Blue Lagoon music venue and many more.  All are within easy walking distance of each other which makes a change from 'city' art festivals.

Established in 1986, the festival is one of the main annual events on the entertainment calendar and has featured many big events since its inception.

The 1998 programme revolved around two themed weekends, May 2nd - 24th, 'Irish Traditional Music Weekender' which has the best in Irish Traditional Music, including appearances from Lunasa,  Andy Irvine, Sliabh Notes, a double bill at the Hawkswell featuring Iarla O'Lionard and local heroes Dervish making a rare concert appearance at the Hawkswell Theatre.  The second weekend of the festival, 'Blues/World Music Weekender' featured a Blues/World music theme featuring Black Umfolosi, Artists from Tallahassee featuring Leonidas Lipovestsky, Big Daddy Randy Webster, and Bill Wharton and the Ingredients and many more acts from Africa and the Caribbean in serious dance mode.

The Model Arts Centre hosted a programme of exhibitions and various classical recitals, readings.  Local award winning sculptor Liz Caffery exhibited her work at the Sligo Art Gallery.

It has always been Sligo Arts Festivals policy to keep entrance fees as low as possible, which has only been possible with the support of the Arts Council, Guinness Group Sales, Sligo Leader Partnership Co. and especially local businesses in the form of sponsorship and patronage.  This support enables us to put on the most accessible Arts Festival in Ireland.
