The first known Irish breeding colony was discovered in May 1997
near Lough Neagh. Since then they have been found around the northern
and eastern edges of the lake, and in Co. Down. They have also been
recorded by bat detector in Blessington (Co. Wicklow). The species
has been recorded in many parts of Britain, and is migratory. It
has been increasing recently in Europe, and so the Irish population
may be recent in origin. Or we may have had this species for a long
time - we will probably never know. The Nathusius' Pipistrelle is
similar in appearance to the "common" Pipistrelle, but is slightly
larger, with longer shaggy hair having pale tips. They can also
be identified by call using a bat detector, but this is best left
to the experts!
