Buy Nothing Day
Cller Terence Slowey, Donegal County Council, advises
that on December 2nd this year there will a boycott by
the consumers of Ireland in protest to the excessive and
unjust prices that are being charged to the Irish
consumer. A similar protest was organised in Greece this
year 3rd September where consumers avoided all shops,
pubs andrestaurants etc. in protest to the prices that
were being charged. The European commissioner for
consumer affairs (an Irish man David Byrne) and the Irish
Government have both being entirely passive with this
issue when a lot feel something could have been done.
Since the Euro change-over Ireland leap-frogged above
France and Germany to become the second most expensive
country in the euro zone after Finland. This contention
is supported by several leading companies and
organisations including Forfas and Price Waterhouse
Coopers. Please advise those you know to support the
boycott. The boycott is set to last for one day as in
Greece.

The Late Mary B. Maguire
The death occurred suddenly at her home in Main St,
Ardara, on November the 7th, of Mary B. Maguire, aged 72
years. She was born in Ardara, living with her family in
Drimaha until the age of 22 years, when she emigrated to
Philadelphia, spending 32 years there. Her first post was
in a Parochial House, and then she took up employment
with the Wetherill family, remaining with them for thirty
years. Because of bad health, Mary retired to her native
Ardara in her mid-fifties. Mary and her sister, Margaret,
are well-known locally for their voluntary work in
keeping so beautifully the Church of the Holy Family.
This work was a source of great pride and joy for Mary.
A long-standing friend of Mary's, Father Shem, travelled
from Cork to attend her funeral, and assisted Father
Doohan at a con-celebration of Mass in the Church of the
Holy Family, on the occasion of the removal of the
remains to the church. The funeral took place on November
the 9th, Fr Shem and Canon Austin Laverty officiating.
Among the many lovely flowers were two beautiful bouquets
sent by the Wetherill family of Philadelphia.
Mary is survived by her twin-brother, Patrick John
Maguire, Philadelphia, her three sisters, Margaret,
Philomena and Ann of Main St, Ardara, her sister,
Bernadette McCloskey, Coventry, England, her nieces and
nephews, her cousins, Jack Maguire and his wife, Carmel,

Local G.A.A. History to be
Published
The G.A.A.
Club are currently putting together the history of
the Club. The book will be launched early next year.
There are many photos and articles in the Parish which
have yet to reach the Committee. As this will be a once-off
publication, it is vital that all data relating to the G.A.A.
in our Parish, from its foundation, is included. People
are asked to forward old pictures, newspaper cuttings and
any other information which should be included in the
book, which is to be launched early next year. All items
will be treated with care and returned to the owner as
soon as possible. It is hoped that the people of the
Parish would support the local branch of the G.A.A. on
this, and forward items before Christmas to any of the
following:- Mary Kelly, John McConnell, James McHugh,
George Doherty, Tom O'Donnell, James McBrearty, Conal A.
Gildea or Charlie Mooney.
Rural Transport
South West Donegal Communities Partnership Ltd have been
working on this issue for a number of months.
The good news is that they have been awarded funding
under the Rural Transport Initiative administered by ADM
to set up a Community Transport Company, which will
provide a Rural Transport Service. This initial funding
will allow for the running costs of the service for the
first year, by which time additional and more permanent
funding will be secured.
Seirbhís Iompair Tuaithe Teo hope to have the buses on
the road by the end of November, in plenty of time for
your Christmas visiting and shopping. Staff have been
employed and the office will be based in Kilcar. Delays
in securing office space has meant the staff having to
work temporarily from the CDP office in Killybegs.
Timetables with route information will be circulated over
the coming weeks via An Post, and will also be available
in shops, Health Centres, Post Offices etc. It is
understood that a bus route from Narin and Portnoo to
Ardara is planned, another from Loughros Pt to Ardara,
and a weekly bus service between Ardara and Donegal town
is also in the pipeline.
SWDCPL will keep us posted of further progress!
S.W. Donegal Information Project
Access to information is essential to avail of services
particular to your needs. In rural Ireland access is
often extremely difficult. The S.W. Donegal Communities
Partnership, having identified this need, are, in
association with Comhairle, seeking to find a solution. It
is their hope that with adequate training this service
will be available to both individuals and community
groups.
Training is set to begin in their Resource Centre in
Killybegs on the 19th of November. For additional
information, contact 073- 41972.
S.W Donegal Communities Partnership Resource
Centre
A number of services, including the Donegal Domestic
Violence Service, is available from the Resource Centre,
Killybegs.

information or referral numbers may contact 073 - 41972.

preparation, free access to computers are also there. You
are very welcome!
Congratulations
Roisín Maguire, Drimaghey Park, is to be congratulated
on being the October-winner of a new car in the monthly
Rehabilitation draw. Roisín won a Ford Focus Freedom
2002 and will take delivery of her new car in the near
future.
New York Marathon
Ardara had a candidate in the recent New York Marathon.
We were ably represented by Thomas Boyle of the
Greenhouse, who had run the New York Marathon once
before, in 1998. Because of preparation for the re-opening
of his improved business premises, Thomas had only had
time to train for the five weeks preceding his journey to
New York. Nevertheless, he ran the Marathon in a time of
4 hours and 20 minutes, being placed as 14,136th in a
field of 31,500 runners. As he was wearing the
distinctive green, white and gold Irish athletic vest,
Thomas was delighted to find there was plenty of support
for an Irish participant, from the spectators lining the
route. He found the weather in New York to be icy cold
and was glad to return to the milder temperatures of
Donegal, where we only have a little rain to bother us!
Donegal South Forum
Donegal South Forum is currently compiling a directory of
all voluntary and community groups in their area. The
Ardara Community Play Group, the Heiritage Centre, the
Parish Council, and the Ardara Women's Group are already
affiliated with South Forum. For those groups who may be
seeking funding from various government departments or
agencies, inclusion in this directory may strengthen your
request by underlining your commitment. Registration
forms are available from Donegal South Forum Ltd,
Allingham Bridge, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal. Phone/fax
072-22888, or e-mail donegalsouthforum@eircom.net
The deadline for submissions is very near, so don't delay
your registration.
