Michael Buckley comes from a very musical family, both his father and brother are outstanding
jazz saxophonists. Something of a child prodigy (he played with the great American saxophonist
George Coleman when he was only twelve), he began on flute and then added saxophone a little
later on. He performed as a soloist in European Youth Jazz Orchestra playing alongside Lee
Konitz, touring extensively in lreland and Britain. He also won a scholarship to attend the
Skidmore Jazz Summer School in New York.
One of the most outstanding soloists on his instrument in Ireland today, he currentiy leads his own
quartet and this group performed with the Canadian trumpeter Ingrid Jensen at the 1995 Cork Jazz
Festlval.
