January 5th

Sale of valuable licensed premises at Camross on Thursday the seventeenth of January.

Lot 1 : Licensed house and premises at yearly rate of £9 situated at Cross of Camross. About a acre attached to the Premises. Lot 2 : Four and a half statue acres on which stood a fully seven-day licensed shop an dwelling house. Out-Offices including car shed, meal store, bottling store, cow house, stable etc. Shop and dwelling house can be rebuilt at a moderate cost. Held free of rent forever. Up to time of burning, vendor did substantial trade. Nearest business house is four mile distance. Two fowl markets are held in Camross. Thursday and Friday.

Wexford hounds to meet at Camross on Monday the seventh at 11 o' clock. Followers should shut all gates and avoid damage.

February 9th

A transfer of spirit license was granted to John J. Rochford for premises at Camross.

March 1st

Thomas Kendrick of Poulpeasty died on the twenty-sixth of February.

March 8th

Camross coursing meeting to be held on Sunday the ninth of March in field given by P O' Callaghan of Hayestown. Big supply of hares. First brace in slips at 1 o' clock, sharp.

August 24th

Grand concert and entertainment will be given by Rathangan dramatic class in Camross Hall on Sunday August the thirty-first. Doors open at 7 o' clock. Start at 7:30 sharp. A dance will be held after concert.

August 30th

Further advert for concert in Camross Hall.

Two farces will be produced : 'The New Waiter', and 'The New Doctor'. Adm. 2s and 1s. Gents 2s; Laides1s.

October 4th

Robert Delaney of Camross fined 2s 6d at New Ross District Court for no lights.

October 25th

J.J. Rochford, publican, Camross charged with breach of licensing Act. People on premises after hours. Case adjourned and would be held over him for some months as it was a list offense. He had bought premises only nine months previously.

January 10 th

Notice that Camross Weigh bridge has been overhauled and properly adjusted and will be available to the public.

Charges : Loads - 6d; Cattle - 4d

Pigs - 2d; Sacks - 2d. Weighing each Monday in the forenoon. Robert Stafford and J. Deacon : weigh masters.

 

January 24th

Camross publican John J. Rochford was in New Ross district court for a breach of the Licensing Act. His case had been adjourned and there had been no complaints in the three months interval. No penalty was imposed but defendant should pay prosecution costs.

 

February 14th

Grand ceilidh to be held in Camross Hall on Sunday the fifteenth of February. Tickets - Gents - 5s; Ladies 3s. Can be had an application to Hon. Sec. or Treasurer, Camross.

 

November 14th

Michael McEvoy, a farmer and road contractor from Camross, was found dead on the road at Poulpeasty. He was 54 years old. Jury found him dead from heart failure due to exposure.

Grand mumming competition at Camross Hall on January the twelfth. First Prize : Gold medals.

Second prize : Silver medals. Proceeds in aid of the hall. Each set is required to perform two figures and recite two rhymes. Points for dress, rhymes, dancing, striking and time. 12/- per set. Adm. front seats 2/-, back seats 1/-. doors open at 7 o' clock for 7.30 start. entries to John Kavanagh and John Fitzpatrick.

 

January 18 th

Mumming competition at Camross was a great success. Ballyvergin won. Standing room was full up.

Decision to erect a memorial to the late Brigid Fitzhenry ex N.T. who was principal teacher in Trinity Deaths : Ellen the third daughter of George and Mary Larkin Taghmon died in Killimor, Co. Galway on May the twenty-first.

Ellen's sister Mary died in Taghmon on May the twenty-second.

Edward Maddock, Tomcoole Taghmon, died aged 32 on May the twenty-second.

Moses Fitzhenry sued Patrick Condon jr. of Poulpeasty for the seduction of his daughter Mary. Was awarded £100.

Taghmon sports day postponed till August the third because of clash with the senior league football matches in Wexford.

Death : John Horinick, Kilgarvin, age 69 died on September the 29.

Glynn beat Taghmon 6 - 1 to 1 - 3. Glynn won easily which was a great surprise to Taghmon followers.

Moses Foley Camross charged with drunkenness gave an undertaking not to offend again.

Taghmon Notes : A card drive to take place at Aidan McLoughlin's of Shanoul has been transferred to Camross Hall because of large attendance expected.

Taghmon Notes : Up to a dozen sets expected at Camross mumming competition. The famous Banogue set is training hard and the Dungeer mummers have been reorganised.

About 55 tables were engaged at a card drive held at Camross Hall under the patronage of Messrs. Foley, Doyle and Morrisey.

Taghmon Notes : Special meeting of

Camross United football club. Thomas Murphy in the chair. Sec. J. Kelly was directed to write to the County Sec. requesting the postponement of the upcoming of the match as most of the Camross players had flu.

Taghmon Notes : A meeting of the South Wexford Brigade of the Old IRA was held in Camross Hall last Sunday. Arrangements were made for a reunion at Easter. Arrangements are in the hands of Philip Parle of Taghmon.

Taghmon Notes : Taghmon and Camross will again field a team in the coming championships. It was generally reorganised that their defeat in the county semi-finals was a result of lack of practice.

Taghmon Notes : Camross United Gaelic Football Club heald a successful reunion in Camross Hall on Sunday night. Music was by Midnight Minstrels ceilidhe band. J. Kelly was M.C.

The match against Clongeen was postponed because of inclement weather.

Taghmon Notes : Vote of sympathy with Andy Waters on the death of his uncle James McDonald was tendered by a meeting of Camross United Football Club.

Local branch of Gaelic League will stage on entertainment including song, dance and drama in Camross Hall on Sunday night in aid of church funds. Dungeer will give a display.

Taghmon Notes : 'The Irish Rebal' will be staged in Camross Hall by the Adanstown Gaelic League Class on Sunday night.

Carrowreigh Gaelic League put on two humorous sketches in Camross Hall last Sunday night. Dungeer mummers gave a display. Mr. Carey, Irish Teacher was stage manager.

Taghmon Notes : In a return match at Upton on Sunday afternoon Camross beat Taghmon 3-1 to 2-2 in a minor football match. A. Morrissey of Camross refereed. There was a large crowd of spectators.

Taghmon Notes : James Neville of Ballyvergin, and an energetic working committee are getting up a '45' drive in Camross Hall on Sunday night. A large patronage is expected.

Taghmon Notes : Moses McCabe and Sonny Kavanagh were the winners at the card drive in Camross Hall. 35 tables were occupied.

At New Ross District Court J. Frizelle, soliciter, on behalf of John Morrissey was granted a license for a dance in Camross Hall.

Taghmon Notes : At a meeting of the Coursing Club, P.J. Cullen, M. Ryan and L. Leary were appointed a committee to make arrangements for the annual dance in Camross Hall in December.

 

November 6th

November 13th

New Ross district football final between Camross and Raheenduff was abandoned in the seconh half with Camross leading 2 - 2 to 1 point. Second half was delayed because the ball burst and did not resume till dusk. There was a pitch invasion and 'scraps' between players and it became too dark

to follow the ball which eventually disappeared followed by more fights between the players which precipitated a further pitch invasion. The game was not resumed.

 

November 27th

Camross beat Raheenduff 5 - 5 to 5 points in the New Ross District Championship junior football final replay. They were deserving winners.

December 4th

County junior football semi-final at Bellefield on Sunday December the fifth. Oulart [Gorey] V Camross [New Ross] at 2.30 p.m. Adm. 6d. Sideline seats 6d extra.

 

December 11th

Camross beat Oulart 6 - 2 to 1 point in county football semi final. Game marred by 'shamefull scenes' particularly towards the end of the game when it became a fiasco. Fights between players led to pitch invasion. A 'faction fight' involved players and spectators ensued. After the final whistle trouble broke out again. Eventually the gardai had to interbvene to restare order.

 

December 18th

Junior Football final between Camross and St. Johns Volunteers at 2.30 at Bellefield on Sunday the nineteenth of December. Referee : Phil

Murphy. Adm. 6d. Sideline 6d extra. Thomas Murphy is trainer and coach of Camross United.

 

December 24th

Volunteers beat Camross 4 - 1 to 1 - 5.

Several times Camross looked the winning only for volunteers to recover and surge ahead.

Taghmon Notes : A Flonin dated 1696 was discovered while ploughing at Rechestown, Taghmon by Joe White.

Mary Rossiter, Coolaw Taghmon died on the twelfth.

Taghmon Notes : Play in St. Fintans Hall by the Lady's Island Dramatic society 'The wedding of Katie Dempsey.' Harmonica Band directed by Ted O' Donnell, played in the interval.

Paths and seats have been put into the cemetery.

Taghmon Lion Hunt. Big Article. 4 year old lioness escaped from Hecbenberg's travelling circus in Taghmon on Sunday evening. It was eventually shot dead.

Clongeen beat Camross 8 - 1 to 3 goals in the New Ross District junior hurling Championship.

Recently appointed Bishop of Ferns, Dr. Stanton visited Taghmon.

Rev. E.J. Codd, sature of Aughnagan, Taghmon and P.P. in New York died after saving his sister from drowning. He had been in Trinity Stars football team and won a county championship medal over 20 years before.

Death : Anastasia Watterstone, daughter of the late Patrick anmd Elizabeth Codd of Aughnagan Taghmon killed ina Manchester air raid on the twenty-second of December 1940.

March 15th

Wexford Senior Football final Camross V Volunteers to be played at Bellefield on the sixteenth of March. Camross have high hopes and play with a dashing open style but Volunteers have experience and a reputation to maintain.

 

March 22nd

Death ; Annie Rigley of Poulpeasty, Taghmon died on March seventeenth.

County final abandoned 20 minutes fromfull time. Match marked by 'unpardonable roughness' and 'deliberate fouling'. William Kelly of Camross and a Volunteers player were sent off. Later J. Wlsh was ordered off but the decision was challenged. Fighting broke out and a pitch invasion followed. Referee abandoned the game because the player had refused to leave the field. Volunteers were winning by 2 - 6 to 1 point at the time. The match will be remembered as 'one of the worst exibitions of sportsmanship ever witnessed on our Gaelic fields.'

 

March 29th

Meeting of Co. Board concerning abandoned match. Extensive report. William Kelly and James Walsh were suspended for 3 months. Jack Kelly was banned for 6 months for refusing to leave the field. James Kelly represented Camross at the meeting. Volunteers were awarded the match.

 

April 5th

Death of John O' Callaghan, his wife and five children in Brikenhead from a landmine explosion. He was the brother of Patrick O' Callaghan of Hayestown and Mrs. Parle of Clovervalley, Taghmon.

Rumours that Camross will field no teams this year. They claim they did not get fair treatment from the Co. cttee.

Death of Annie Murphy of Ballybeg Taghmon on April the twentieth.

Letter from Dr. B. Coffey of Taghmon to Health Board complaining of exorbitant rent of £50 for dispensary residence. Taghmon was known as a poor district. Originally the dept. of local gort had wanted £60 pa and board had tried to get it at £30. No action was taken.

Camross wanted case of John Kelly suspension reopened. No action was taken by Co. G.A.A. Board.

 

June 7th

Taghmon Notes : About 11.45 p.m. on Saturday, doors and windows in the district rattled. It is thought that the vibration was caused by an explosion of some sort.

St. James. Ramsgrange beat Camross 3 - 9 to 1 goal in a junior football tie in the New Ross district championship.

South Wexford Brigade, Old I.R.A. cttee meet in Newbawn and decided to hold a general meeting in Camross Hall at an early date to select delegates for the Natoinal Convention.

Emmets V Camross semi-final of the 'sacker' Furlong senior football tournament had to be abandoned when the players started fighting. A pitch invasion followed and the match could not be restarted. Emmets had been leading at the time by

3 - 5 to 3 - 2.

Grand Concert in Camross Hall under the auspices of Taghmon and Camross branch, Fianna Fail on the eight of August. Taghmon St. Gabriel players and Camross dramatic society in laughable farces. Supported by first class concert concert items. Doors open 7.30; commercing 8 p.m. Adm. 1/- and 1/6.

John Culleton suspended for 12 months for playing for Camross when he had already played for UCD in this years championship. The Chairman, Secretary and Captain of Camross were automaticlly

suspended for the same period.

 

August 14

Death of Laurence O' Connor of Trinity, Taghmon aged 70 years. August the seventh.

Taghmon Notes : Comedies staged by St. Gabriel's and Galbally dramatic classes in Camross Hall on Sunday night. Singing and dancing items were contributed by Messrs Redmond and Banville and Misses B. Quigley, K. Keeves and T. Kelly.

February 18th

Camross Hall will be officially opened by the mayor of Wexford James J. Morris on Sunday night the nineteenth. Hall is 35 years old but has been completely reconstructed and enlarged. Almost all the whole work done by local voluntary labour. Hall was designed by Laurence Banville. A concert will follow the opening. Every Sunday night in Lent will see a concert and dramatic entertainment in Camross Hall.
