The AA has denounced the National Roads Authority’s toll-road
proposals as a ‘billion pound blunder’. The NRA announced today
that £1 billion raised from the private sector to be invested in
roads is to be repaid by the imposition of tolls across large
sections of the primary road network. This means that ordinary road
users will face toll charges right across the country on roads built
under the National Development Plan. “This is blinkered thinking
at is worst.” Says public affairs manager Conor Faughnan. “It is
a new and unjustified tax on road use. It is also environmentally
daft because the imposition of tolls will divert traffic off the new
by-passes and back onto the streets of the towns and villages that
we are supposed to be relieving.”
