Several groups
have sprung up around the country to fight against tolled motorways,
the confiscation of land, the destruction of countryside and
communities. N.A.G. is one such group that has been formed in Tipperary to
fight the proposed motorway between Cashel and Mitchelstown, an
unnecessary motorway that is planned to replace a perfectly adequate
road at a cost presently estimated at £250 million pounds for just
20 miles.
Of this £250 million pounds, the consultants will get an
estimated £10 million pounds for producing paper but the farmers
whose land is being, in effect, confiscated would get an estimated £5
million. Former IFA president Mr. Joe Rea chairs N.A.G
He featured in the Irish Times on May 23rd 2001 in
an article by Chris Dooley - “ Opposition to dual carriageway plan grows” - in which
he described what was happening as a “peasants revolt”
