National Road Needs Study

Why did government abandon it?

Extract from NRA '1998 Review and Programme for 1999'

"In July 1998, the Authority presented the National Road Needs Study to Mr. Noel Dempsey, T.D., Minister for the Environment and Local Government. This is the most comprehensive assessment ever undertaken to identify where and in what manner national roads should be improved over a 20 year horizon to 2019."

"The report will assist the NRA planning and programming towards towards the continued development of the network of national roads..."

Liam Connellan, Chairman, National Roads Authority.

We call upon the NRA to revert to its former policy immediately.  This policy, outlined in their National Road Needs Study (1998), was abandoned by them without explanation, at great cost.  Now, without effective consultation and without consent, they are proceeding to construct a completely unsuitable tolled motorway network.  In particular we draw your attention to the following:

Current roads policy in Ireland, therefore aims at an overall balance, focuses on key economic corridors, supports an adequate dispersal of economic development and seeks to bypass congested towns and villages. It concentrates on: -

  • Upgrading and realigning existing roads, rather that building unnecessary new roads.

  • Bypasses to relieve congestion

  • Minimising the construction of new roads and motorways
