Celbridge Abbey was the home of Esther Van Homrigh, who has been immortalised as “Vanessa” by Jonathon Swift who regularly came to the abbey.

The St. John of God Brothers now owns the abbey.  Each year the abbey is the venue for the Swift Seminar at which the life and work of the Dean are considered. The gardens are open to the public.

Celbridge Abbey is really a lovely place to visit and I should know because I have been there many times.

You can buy shrubs and flowers in one part of the abbey.  There is a miniature railway, which is 300 feet long. There is also a playground for small children and there is a trail to follow which is long but it’s very nice. There is a coffee shop and a gift shop as well.
