Citizens Information Centres (CICs) provide free, confidential and impartial information on any subject to anyone who asks. They will also help an enquirer to deal with an organisation where this is necessary and within their abilities.
In practice, this means that the clients of the CIC are the people who dictate the scope of its work. Because CICs are committed to giving help on any subject to anyone who asks, no one needing information
is told 'you've come to the wrong place.' Clients may want the
address of the public library, or the explanation of a letter from the tax office, or to know their rights in connection with a notice to quit: the CIC will provide it, or will know who else can. The CIC has the
resources - notably a comprehensive up to date information system to respond to demands of this kind. The computerised Citizens
Information Database offers on-line access to a body of data that is
comprehensive, current, and integrated, drawing on information from
a range of resources. The Database plays a central role in the overall development of Citizens Information Services, the aim of which is to ensure that all citizens have access to clear information and advice
on their civil and social rights and entitlements
