Our Autism-Specific Unit

Minister Hanafin in our new classroom

In September 2001 St. Nicholas N.S. opened an autism-specific unit. Our school was the first school in Galway to offer such a class in a mainstream setting. Since then the unit has grown from strength to strength and on Friday 10th March 2006 we officially opened our new purpose-built unit for children with autism. The unit- which now includes 4 classrooms catering for children aged 3years to twelve .years .The facility also includes a therapy room, a sensory room, a life-skills room and bathroom facilities -  accommodating  18 pupils at present. A wide range of teaching methodologies are used including A.B.A , T.E.A.A.C.H and P.E.C.S according to the needs of the individual child. Our goal is to promote education in our inclusive setting thus enabling all pupils to belong within an educational community that values their individuality.
