General Introduction
Macra na Féirme is a rural youth organisation. Founded in 1944, it currently has over
8,000 members. 1,600 of these are scattered throughout Cork's 55 clubs.
Aims & Objectives
The main aim of Macra is the personal, social and vocational development of young
people, thus contributing to Agricultural, Rural and Community Development.
Programmes
- Competitions: there are numerous competitions organised, e.g. Drama, Debating, Quizzes,
Stock Judging, Entertainment Shows and lots more.
- Travel: wide and varied opportunities exist with exchanges to Northern Ireland,
Scotland, England and Australia. There are young farmer scholarships to New Zealand and
the U.S., and holidays to Russia, London and skiing!. Local club exchanges are also
organised.
- Training: courses are provided in Leadership Skills, Programme Planning, Facilitation,
Personal Development and Political Education, to mention a few.
- Clubs: they are self-managing and organise a programme to suit members needs. This
typically includes social, sport, travel, community involvement and after-meeting
activities.
