The Dunlavin Massacre
May 24th 1798
Drawings by Martin Smyth - 6th class.
The Wicklow Militia was the garrison in Dunlavin, a small town in the west of County Wicklow. News came through that United Irishmen had attacked Ballymore Eustace a few miles away. Later in the day a group of soldiers belonging to the Ancient Briton regiment arrived in the town from Ballymore Eustace. They were very angry and decided to get revenge on the prisoners in the Guard House. Three were brought out on the Fair Green and shot. Some were hung from the Market House. In all 35 people were killed.
Later that day about 200 rebels about to attack Dunlavin were attacked by the Militia and Cavalry and chased into the mountains.
