The birth of Celtic Moon Design was a coming together of ideas between my husband, Andrew and myself. In the beginning, it was the vehicle we created to promote my artwork, but as we grew it became far more than that. I've always adored myths and legends, and from a very young age dreamed of becoming a book illustrator like Arthur Rackham. I wanted to re-create the magical artwork I'd spend hours pouring over, in my own style. Setting up in business had been in the back of my mind for awhile also, and during the hours I spent at my drawing board, I ran over lots of ideas as to how I could market myself as an artist. I needed to get the pictures out there somehow. I came to the conclusion that the most effective way to do this was to market the designs as greeting cards. These would catch the attention of a far larger number of people than individual paintings could ever hope to. We knew how costly full colour printing would be and it was not really a consideration for us, so we decided to start out using black line images. With Andrews help, I created my first set of designs entitled 'Images Of Albion.' These were three characters taken from the Arthurian legends to celebrate an inspiring visit we'd made to Glastonbury where our dreams had suddenly been realised. We had them printed as greeting cards, amazed at how well they were received and from that moment on spent every spare moment thinking and working towards our goal. Our move in April 1996 from our birth place in Wales to the North West of Ireland at the time seemed rather reckless, but it has turned out to be the greatest adventure imaginable. Leaving a comfortable large home with central heating and double glazing for a three roomed cottage with a smoky range and draughts you wouldn't believe may not seem like a great idea, but now we would not swap for the world. Through constant progress and feedback from our wonderful customers (bless you all), we have now moved into full colour. This has been a major turning point for us. Suddenly, the world is open and my mind overwhelmed with new ideas. There are many new designs on the site now, some new and some quite old. But colour has added a new dimension again and it is such an exciting medium to work in after the single-mindedness that can sometimes come with working in one colour. Inspiration has taken a more spiritual turn too, and we're having great pleasure exploring the earth-based beliefs of the world of Faery. My pictures have progressed from Celtic Mythology into new realms of enchantment. As things stand at present, Celtic Moon also seems to be moving into a new stage in its development. It is now more or less Andrews project. From day one, it was Andrew who set everything up, went on the courses and spent the long hours night after night learning how to promote, nurture and keep it alive. Without his tireless enthusiasm and constant confidence-building we could never have taken things this far. His unconditional belief in me is my guiding light. His love is returned a hundred fold and his devotion to both the business and myself and Branwyn is our most precious gift. So, as I now move into a new phase in my career, Andrew will steer Celtic Moon along it's new course. We're not sure yet what it has in store for us, but we have complete faith that it will be something weird and wonderful as has always been the way so far. You can always contact us here |
