KILCROHANE

"KILCROHANE, a parish in the barony of Dunkerron, county Kerry, province of Munster, Ireland, containing Sneem, its post town. It is 14 miles long by 6 broad, and extends along the coast of the Kenmare estuary, between the river Blackwater and Hoghead. The surface is a tract of wild mountain and bog. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Ardfert and Aghadoe, value with one other, £355, in the patronage of the crown. The church was built in 1810 by the late Board of First Fruits. There are four united Roman Catholic chapels in the parish, likewise several day schools. The principal mansion is Derymine, late the residence of Daniel O'Connell. A remarkable fort stands upon the coast, called the Estaigue-an-ar, and near the village are the ruins of the abbey of Darynancy."

"BLACKWATER, a village in the parish of Kilcrohane, barony of Dunkerron, in the county of Kerry, province of Munster, Ireland, 6 miles to the W. of Kenmare. It is situated on the west bank of the river, from which it takes its name. In the vicinity is Blackwater Cottage. The banks of the river are steep and well-wooded, and the scenery around is remarkably picturesque. The Blackwater has a course of about 8 miles from Lough Brinn to the Kenmare river. A bridge of two arches crosses it by the village."

"CROW ISLAND, in the parish of Kilcrohane, in the lower lake of Killarney, in the county of Kerry, prov: of Munster, Ireland. Here is an abandoned copper-mine."

"DARRYNANE, in the parish of Kilcrohane, late the residence of Daniel O'Connel, in the barony of Dunkerrin, in the county of Kerry, province of Munster, Ireland. It stands on the coast, 4½ miles S. of Waterville. In the vicinity are some monastic remains, and a monument of the O'Connels."

"DINISH, (or Dinsh), a small island in the parish of Kilcrohane, barony of Dunkerron, in the county of Kerry, province of Munster, Ireland, one of the islands of the Hog group. It lies between the estuary of the Kenmare river and Ballinskelligs Bay, near the Hog's Head.

"GARINISH, an island in Sneem harbour, in the parish of Kilcrohane, county Kerry, Ireland, near the mouth of the Kenmare river."

"HOG ISLANDS, (or Magheries), a group of small islands lying on the S. side of Ballinskellig Bay, in the parish of Kilcrohane, barony of Dunkerrin, county Kerry, province of Munster, Ireland, 3 miles W. of Lamb Head. Scariff and the Little Hog are the largest of the cluster.

"MACHREE ISLANDS, (or Seven Hogs), islets off the coast of county Kerry, in the parish of Kilcrohane, Ireland. They are situated on the E. side of Brandon Bay.

"MELAAN, an islet in Kenmare Bay, in the parish of Kilcrohane, county Kerry, Ireland, 1 mile W. by S. of Lamb-Head. Its cliffs are extremely rugged, and are a favourite haunt of the Pooka, or Irish Puck."

"ROSSMORE, an islet in the parish of Kilcrohane, county of Kerry, Ireland, 5 miles S.E. of Sneem."

"SNEEM, a seaport village and post town in the parish of Kilcrohane, barony of Dunkerrin, county Kerry, province of Munster, Ireland, 12 miles S.W. of Kenmare, on a rivulet of the same name, which flows from the mountains in a S.S.W. course of 5 miles into the harbour, and on the road to Cahersiveen. It is irregularly built, and contains a church and Roman Catholic chapel, with parochial and National schools. Petty sessions are held once in each month, and fairs seven times a year. There is a constabulary station in the village."

"WEST COVE, a hamlet in the parish of Kilcrohane, barony of Dunkerrin, in the county of Kerry, province of Munster, Ireland, 15 miles S.W. of Kenmare. It is situated on the N. bank of Kenmare river. There is a dispensary within the Kenmare Poor-law Union.

"WESTCOVE, a hamlet in the parish of Kilcrohane, barony of Dunkeron, county Kerry, Ireland, 8 miles S.W. of Sneem. It is on the river Kenmare, and is a coastguard and fishing station."
