RATASS

"RATASS, (or Rathass), a parish in the barony of Trughanacmy, county Kerry, province of Munster, Ireland, 1½ mile E. of Tralee, its post town. The parish is traversed by the road from Tralee to Killarney. The living is a rectory and vicarage in the diocese of Ardfert and Aghadoe, value £42, in the patronage of the crown. It is united to Ballymacelligott in the Roman Catholic arrangement. There are one or two day schools. In this parish are the ruins of Ballybeggan Castle, formerly a stronghold of the Desmonds. It was burnt by the Irish during the revolution. Remains of the old church are also visible, and other castle ruins at Ballymullen. Marble is worked.
