FARMING The size of a typical farm around Creeslough is roughly 16-30 acres. The land is mostly marsh land, hilly or bog land. The remainder is arable. Since 1929 Creeslough still holds the world record for potato yield - 36 ton per acre, on the farm of John J. Silke. The most common crops are hay, silage, and potatoes. The farmers plant the potatoes in mid-April and they are ready for picking in September. The grass seed is sown and it will turn into hay the following year. Silage (what the cows eat) is made from hay or grass that is cut and put into bales.
