FIELDSPORT ... LONG PAST IT'S BAN DATE!

Dear Editor,

As we endure yet another evil hare coursing season it must be stated once again that live hare coursing is not a sport. Two greyhounds are set upon a hare so that coursing followers can bet on the outcome in a gambling medium.
If we suspend belief and accept the principle of "fieldsports" then live hare coursing would be regarded as the 'bastard' child of this misguided twisted philosophy. Fieldsports set up an animal for the reasons of killing it for food or as pest control. The ghoulish followers take an active part in the activity sometimes travelling many miles in order to be present at a situation in which an animal is about to lose it's life.
This sort of strenuous activity and effort would be completely foreign to a coursing follower. He or she just wants to turn at the meeting, stand for hours as the entertainment is served up while betting on a good greyhound.
Not for him or her the cry of the hounds, the thrill of the chase or whatever romantic drivel that takes your fancy.
Live hare coursing has long gone past it ban date. It should be consigned to history's wheelie bin. Add to this all of the other animal abuse acts that crawl under the "fieldsports" blanket and we would have a society that would acknowledge, respect and protect animal rights.
Yours
John Tierney
