PASSAGE WEST ON ROAD TO RECOVERY ...

The recent news of the lifting of the safety restrictions on development in the harbour side town of Passage West has been welcomed by Passage West Town Commissioners and Cork County Council.

Chairman of Passage West Town Commission, Eddie O’Mahony, said, '”This is extremely good news for the town which has been counting the cost in terms of lost opportunity and badly. needed re-vitalisation. It clears the way for a fresh approach to the challenge posed by the transition of Passage West from its historic portside role to one that can capitalise on the international trend towards more diversified waterfront uses and gives fresh opportunity to put a living heart back into the town.

At a recent meeting of town commissioners, Cork County Council and other stakeholders, a renewed determination to put Passage West back on track was evident. It is proposed to develop a range of confidence building measures to try, and reverse the setbacks occasioned to the town by the earlier safety restrictions, This will include making representations to Government to have the Urban Renewal designation period extended beyond its current termination date of end of 2002 in order to compensate for the days encountered in brining forward worthwhile developments.

Further actions will be publicised in due course so as to inform the local community and alert the market to development opportunities in Passage West.
Willie O’Mahony T,C,
Chairman
Passage West Town Commission
