COLLEGE CORINTHIANS AFC

The extremely bad weather of last weekend forced the cancellation of a number of our schoolboy fixtures with only our Under 14 Premier Division side managing to beat the weather, however the bad weather did not effect our Under 7 Street Leagues and the finals of our Under 9 Indoor Soccer League.

Under 7
Our Under 7 Street Leagues take place every Saturday morning on the Club’s all-weather pitch in Corinthians Park. The leagues are open to schoolboys born in the years 1993 and 1994. The leagues have proved a tremendous success with goals aplenty and some cracking matches. Last Saturdays games were no exception.
The big surprise last weekend was the defeat of league leaders Manchester United by Barcelona in a nine goal thriller. In a very enjoyable contest, Barcelona left previous form behind to snatch victory on a 5-4 scoreline. For Barcelona, Kieran Farmer, Brian Lenihane, Gavin Carroll and Peter O’Brien played well, while for Manchester United, Billy Davis was superb and he received great support from Peter Hurley and Brian Cuttbert. Liverpool stayed in touch at the top of the table as a result of a hard fought 2-1 victory over Chelsea -for Liverpool James Tyner, Sean Moloney, Shane Collins and David Barry were outstanding, while for Chelsea Deane Nolan and Eoin Rigney did well.
Cork City have improved greatly in recent weeks and are now moving in to a challenging position. Over the weekend they proved too strong for title contenders Arsenal taking the points on a 6-3 scoreline. For Cork City Captain Rory Burke, Barry Egan and Garry Beecher had fine matches, while for Arsenal Jack Wilkins, John Moynihan and Luke O’Sullivan did well.
Everton picked up a great point in a 3-3 draw with Real Madrid. Conor Canon, Matthew Langley and James McCarthy played well for Everton, while for Real Madrid Evan Browne, Ian Tobin, Rory Scannell and Peter Barry had fine matches.

Finals Day
The final of this years Under 7 Street Leagues will take place on Saturday February 17th - weather permitting. Preparations are now beginning in earnest for the finals and hopefully everybody will enjoy the day.

Under 9 Indoor Leagues
The league, which has run for the last three months has proved a tremendous success and the final day certainly lived up to its star billing. Italy captained by David Nation took on Brazil skippered by Dean Kelly in the main final and it was Italy who proved the stronger side taking the spoils on a 3-1 scoreline. Italy’s team was made up of: David Nation, Stuart Chisholm, Robert Bennett, Jonathon O’Leary, Kieran Twohig
The Brazilian side, which was strong favourites to win the final included Dean Kelly as captain, Ryan Nolan, Mark Parkes, Ryan Levis and David Ring.
Other results on the day saw Germany skippered by Rory O’Brien defeating Argentina 2-1 in the third and fourth place play off, while Russia captained by Peter Nolan took the plate competition defeating Portugal 3-1 in the final.
Finally Spain overcame Holland in a thrilling contest, which was ultimately decided in a penalty shoot-out. Talking of penalties Kevin O’Connor for Portugal proved too strong for his contemporaries in the penalty competition taking the honours with Ryan Nolan, Andrew Neville and Olan Kelleher finishing runners up.

FAI Coaching
The Club would like to congratulate the following schoolboy coaches who have recently passed their FAI Level I coaching assessment:
Richard Moloney – Under 7; John Corcoran, Ger Kilcommons and Joe O’Connell – Under 10; Mark O’Donovan, Dan O’Callaghan, Billy O’Connor and Danny Drennan – Under 11; Dan Cronin and Neil Daly – Under 12; Brian Scannell – Under 13
Corinthians now had over 20 coaches who have completed their Level I course while another 5 coaches have completed their Level II assessments.
Underage Coaching
Underage coaching takes place every Saturday morning in Corinthians Park. The Under 9 age group born in 1991 are on from 9.30am to 10.45am, while the Under 10’s and 11’s are on from 10.45am to 12noon. The Under 7’s and Under 8’s take place from 12.15pm to 1.30pm. The Club will be taking names shortly for the Clubs outdoor Street Leagues, which will start in early March. If anyone would like to get involved in the leagues they should come along to Corinthians Park on Saturday mornings or contact Ger Kilcommons at 4363456 or Terry O’ Donovan at 4891257.

DOUGLAS GAA

Under Age Section
Just to refresh your memories next weekend is a very important one for the club. Our 2nd U 15 squad play Carrigaline in the football league final. The team reached the Championship Final but lost out on the day to Blarney. This time it is hoped that silverware will be brought back to the club.
The A team play St. Vincents for the Dr. Lucey Shield. This trophy was Last won by the Douglas Club forty three years ago. Sam Collins was involved with the winning team over four decades ago - he is a selector with this team.
It is hoped that you will come out and support both teams on Saturday next in their bid for glory.

Senior Section
Sunday next sees the start of the new season for our junior and minor football teams.
The minor teams are very young. Some of these players on the panels will be eligible for three years. Knowing the lads they are looking forward to the challenge. The opening game for the Premier Team is against our neighbours Nemo. The second Minor Team will play Crosshaven. The junior team also open their campaign against Nemo.
The second squad had a very usefull work out last weekend. They defeated Rochestown in Ballyorban 1-12 to 2-2. The conditions were very poor but overall this was a most promising performance against an up and coming Rochestown squad. Douglas led 0-7 to 2-0 at the break. Terence Deveraux, Martin McSweeney, Joe Barry and Declan Reidy played well. Tom Burke was top scorer

CORK GIRLS SOCCER U12 CUP Q/FINAL

Carrgaline 0-3 Douglas Hall
In terrible conditions Douglas hall took control of this game and thanks to Karen O'Neill, Enima Hughes and Jenny O'Donovan they had a three-goal halftime lead. Anything that did come at the Douglas defence was superbly dealt with in particular by Chreasa Murphy. In tile second half Mary Barrett orchestrated most of the Douglas attacking play and she was helped by girl of the Match Emma McCarthy and Ashling O'Sullivan. Only some superb goalkeeping from Carrigaline in the second half kept Douglas from increasing their lead. But this won't dampen their spirits as they prepare to face Wilton in the semis.
