DOUGLAS CAMOGIE CLUB
Last Saturday saw Douglas Camogie Club get off to
a great start this session by wining last years Under 13 runners
up Seandun League. Douglas beating Brian Dillions on a scoreline
of 3.3 to 0. The game itself was slow to start and scores were
hard to come by, but a point by Emma Heffernan in the 22nd minute
settled the team down and Douglas went off at half time leading
by a point to nil. In the second half Douglas lifted the game and
an opportunist goal from Olive Tobin became the vital score
needed. Further goals by Linda McCarthy and Rachel O'Sullivan and
points from Jenny O'Donovan and Deirdre Murphy who turned in a
fine performances supported by Hilary O'Connell who for such a
young player showed true grit and determination. The subs all
came on and all showed great promise. They were Jessica Jackson,
Zoe Dunlea, Claire O'Brien and Eilish Desmond who had a goal
disallowed.
A good performance for the first game of the session and a
delighted Captain Katherine Hussey on her birthday gratefully
received the first trophy of the year to the sounds of happy
birthday from all her team mates, mentors, supporters. Well done
to all the girls.
Junior Team
On Sunday evening last the Junior Hurlers took on a strong Eire
Og team in a challenge match. For the first half our girls showed
great heart and courage but failed to score and fell behind at
half time to a 1.3 to nil. In the second half our players fought
hard, an excellent display by Eilish Murphy supported by Ger
Burke and a very fine net-minding goal kept the scoreline to a
minimum. However 3 late gaols sealed our fate and Eire Og ran out
gallant winners. The score would have been far greater but for
the excellent defence play by Theresa Buckley. Eire Og eventually
ran out winners at 5.3 to 2 points scored by Liz Lynch to mark
her return to Douglas Camogie Club.
It was a great work out against such a strong team even though we
lost but being so early in the session I feel this team certainly
has a lot to offer. Watch this space!
Trials
We also have a number of girls taken part in Seandun Trails/Training
at present and also have had members take part in trails for Cork
Junior and Minor teams. The selection of these teams have yet to
be finalised.

DOUGLAS GAA SENIOR SECTION
Douglas Hurlers Make Senior Debut
On Sunday last our Senior hurlers made their debut in the League
against Ballincollig. There was a fine crowd in attendance.
Douglas had marvellous support for this historic occasion.
The opening quarter was a very even affair with the sides' level
at 0-3 apiece. The Mid-Cork Boys dominated the second quarter and
led 0-7 to 0-3 at the interval.
Ballincollig once more took control after the break. A goal of
superb quality put the Mid-Cork-Team in a commanding position.
Douglas lifted their game thanks to the prompting of Gary Wade,
Paddy Barry, Gary McLoughlin and Thomas Twomey. The score was
reduced to a goal when the Ballincollig Goalkeeper made a
breathtaking save from Gary McLoughlin. Final score Ballincollig
1-19 Douglas 1-8.
Minor Football
The A Grade Team played Delaneys at the latter's ground. The team
were decidedly lucky to go in level at half-time 1-4 to 0-7.
Colin Doyle scored the goal. For me the highlight of the first
half was a punched point - an art that is rarely put into
practise in the modern game.
A second goal of fine individual quality scored by Stephen Dorney
put Douglas six points up. Delaney's reduced the deficit to a
point before Douglas went on to seal victory on a 2-9 to 1-9
scoreline. Neil Heffernan, Jeremy McCarthy and Patrick White made
fine contributions.
Minor B Football
The minor B Footballers recorded a comprehensive victory over St.
Finbarrs B. This was a fine performance for this team - who were
defeated in their first two outings. There were good displays
from Kenny Barry, Mark O'Callaghan, Barry O'Sullivan and Padraigh
Greaney.
Junior A Football
In this game the Douglas Boys (short a few regulars) were
defeated by a very sharp Mayfield outfit. Best for Douglas were
Donal Meade, David Cahill and Brendan O'Callaghan.
The Senior footballers are out for the next two weekends in
preparation for the Championship.
A speedy recovery to Paddy Barry, Padraigh Greaney and Thomas
Cotter. All of whom sustained injuries last weekend
There were six representatives on the Seandún Hurling U 16 Team
last weekend against Imokily - Frank Tobin, Denis O'Riordan, Mark
Harrington, Eoin Carroll, James Moylan and Thomás Cotter.
Congratulations to the Douglas Camogie U 14 girls who brought
further 'Silverware' to the club on Sunday last.
DOUGLAS GAA UNDERAGE
GRAND SLAM
Douglas under 15 hurlers completed their season last Monday by
winning the Under 15 hurling league 2000 thus completing the
grand slam by defeating Glen Rovers. This has been a remarkable
year for this team and we wish them well in the future and hope
to do the grand slam in Under I 6.
The match.
The match itself was a tame affair with both teams a little bit
slow to settle down. The Glen was first to settle scoring a
point, which was cancelled by a Mark Harrington free. Both teams
were missing a lot of chances until James Moylan scored 1-1
without reply. Halftime score saw Douglas ahead on a score line
of 1-3 to 0-4. The second half was a carbon copy of the first
half in which we saw the Glen take the lead for the first time.
The Douglas backs were under fierce pressure for this period but
outstanding work from Thomas Cotter, Frank Tobin. Colin Lehive
and Denis Riordan in the Douglas defence. The Glen finally did
score a goal. which put them ahead by 1 point. From the resulting
puck out the ball broke loose in the middle of the field
resulting in a foul by a Glen player. From this free Mark
Harrington scored a goal and James Moylan scored a fantastic
point with his back facing to the goal. Douglas ended up winners
by 2 points in a tight finish with James Moylan my player of the
match.
UNDER 15 SECTION 2 FOOTBALL
This game played in a wind swept Douglas last weekend saw, our
team beaten by a very strong Whitescross outfit. But to be fair
our lads never gave up the fight. Whitescross played with a
strong wind in the first hallf and put a lot of scores on the
board leaving our lads a lot to do in the second half. They
showed a lot of heart and commitment in the second half by
scoring 3 good points but the gap was too big to bring the score
down and in the end they were beaten by a better side on the day.

COLLEGE CORINTHIANS AFC
It was Cup weekend on the schoolboy front and while
results were mixed we had some excellent performances.
Under 15
Leeds 3 Corinthian Boys 2 - Our Under 15 team travelled to
Ballyvolane to take on Leeds and despite dominating possession
found themselves 3-0 down after 20 minutes, however showing great
character they fought back and goals by Neil Burke and Paul Lynch
reduced the deficit to 3-2 with 15 minutes remaining. As hard as
they tried they could not force a deserved equaliser. Gary
Drennan and Mark Maher were outstanding in mid-field while Ian OCallaghan,
Dan Kelleher and Chris Hammond were excellent second half
substitutes.
Under 13
Corinthians Boys 2 Kilreen Celtic 0 - Corinthian Boys progressed
to the quarter final of the local cup as a result of a fine
victory over Kilreen Celtic. Ian Cullinane with a spectacular
free kick and Mark Murphy were on the scoresheet for Corinthians
while Tom OConnor, Alan Barry, Shane Horgan and Ricky Kenny
turned in fine performances.
Our Under 13 second string Douglas Corinthians put up a terrific
performance as they pushed Premier Division side Lakewood Ath all
the way before conceding a last minute winner and losing out on a
2-1 scoreline. Corinthians goal scorer was Teddy McCarthy and
they had superb performances from James OMahony, Owen
Hearne and Finian Twomey.
Under 11
Two of our Under 11 teams Corinthians Boys and Corinthians United
progressed to the quarter finals of the Under 11 Cup over the
weekend, however there was disappointment for our third Under 11
team Douglas Corinthians as they were knocked out of the
competition going down 4-1 to Riverstown.
Leeside 0 Corinthians United 7 - Corinthians United travelled to
Little Island for what looked like a tricky fixture on paper when
they took on Leeside, however they turned in a superb performance
proving much too strong for Leeside. Goals by Eoin Kilcommons (2),
Chris Fox (2), Mark Twohig, Robert Waters and Barry ODriscoll
gave them a comfortable 7-0 victory. Besides the goal scorers
others to impress on the day were Geroid Cullinane, Daniel
McWhinney and Eoin Buckley.
They were joined in the quarter finals by Corinthian Boys who
scored three times in the first five minutes before eventually
running out easy 10-1 winners against Cobh Ramblers. Jamie
Drennan (4), Eoin McCarthy (2), John OBrien (2), David
Meyler and Patrick OBrien scored for Corinthians, while
Richard ODonovan, Ian Turner, Theo Cullinane and Conor OReilly
played well.

Munster Senior Cup
College Corinthians 1 Leeds 0
Finally a special mention for the Corinthians Senior Team who
moved through to the semi-final of this years Munster Senior Cup
when they defeated Leeds last Sunday morning. The victory puts
the Seniors through to a home draw against League of
Ireland side Cobh Ramblers. Certainly something to look forward
too.
DOUGLAS GAA UNDERAGE
Our matches resumed last weekend with our 13's, 14's and 15's
playing.
Our U 15 were first to play against Mayfield in Douglas but found
the going tough against a strong Mayfield 15. Mayfield were ahead
at half-time but Douglas came more into the game in the second
half but could not put the scores on the board. Mayfield ran out
easy winners in the end.
U 13 Football League Section 1
Douglas 2-8 V Ná Pairsaig 0-2
This game was very evenly balanced in the first half with both
teams finding scores hard to come by.
Ná Pairsaig were first to score with a point from a free.
Douglas replied with a point from a very lively Kevin Murphy. The
half-time score - 2 points each. The second half turned out to be
a different ball game after the Douglas team got a telling of
from their mentors. They played very good football and their
passing improved a lot. Dayne O'Leary who had a great game full
forward turned the game for Douglas by scoring 2-2. Other scores
came from Shane McCarthy and Aidan Kelly. Others to perform well;
Cian Meade, Richard Kingston and Patrick Carroll. Colin
O'Sullivan worked very hard at midfield so did Brian Kavanagh who
played very well in goal.
U 14 Section 1
This game played in Nemo was a typical Douglas / Nemo encounter.
Both teams played very good football in a very entertaining game.
Nemo tried to overcome the Douglas challenge but Douglas stood
firm and took their scores and ran out winners by 4 points.
Players to play well were Phillip Holland, Sean O'Mahony and
Thomas O'Connor in goal.
PS did you ever hear of a GAA supporter calling for a corner ball
in a hurling match (65), well I did? Isn't that right Mick!
NEMO RANGERS
(SPONSORED BY DOUGLAS CREDIT UNION)It was a hectic weekend for
the club with most teams involved in games. The intermediate
footballers were in action against Killmurry on Saturday evening.
Nemo got off to a good start with an early goal from Niall
Corkery and a point by Liam O'Sullivan to put them into the lead.
The lads continued to control the game and lead convincingly at
halftime. After the break we took our points and were four points
up at the finish.
Liam O'Sullivan, Mick Daly, Dylan Mehigan and William Morgan all
performed well. On Sunday morning the minor footballers played
Valley Rovers in Brinny. Our team was off the mark first and lead
0-5 to 1-1 after fifteen minutes. We dominated the rest of the
half and lead by eight points at the end of it. Nemo continued
where they left off in the second half and finished the game with
ten points to spare. Best for Nemo were Brian O'Regan, Kieran
Stone, Fiachra O'Leary and John Harrington. Later that day the
second Minor team was unlucky to lose to Balinhassig after a
spirited comeback. The Intermediate hurlers defeated Milford in
their first match of the year. The lead changed hands on a number
of occasions in the first half with both teams going in level at
the interval. In the second half we got on top and lead at the
end 0-12 to 1-6.
Best for Nemo were Martin Cronin, John Coogan and John Paul
O'Neill.
Nemo Rangers Underage
The Under 13s started their campaign with a lively encounter
against St. Finbarrs. Barrs adapted more quickly to the wet
conditions and were two points to the good before a lovely Nemo
movement ended up with Colm Dineen finding the net. The rest of
the half was even enough and both sides went in level at the
halftime. After the break Nemo started well and were two points
up through Eric Dilloughery and Shane Duncan. Barrs came back
into the game and leveled it towards the end and a fortuitous
goal at the death by the opposition meant that Nemo went away
empty handed.
Stephen Barry, Shane Dorgan, Cian Cummins and Drew Murphy all
played well. Both Under 14 teams were in action in the league on
Saturday. Nemo 1s were away to Carrigaline. Having played with
the wind we lead at halftime. In the second half we scored two
good goals through David Kearney and Ian Nolan. Nemo ran out easy
winners in a game which Ricky Kenny, Shane Horgan and David
Kearney all had good games. Nemo 2s played neighbors Douglas in
Trabeg. Nemo led at halftime 1-3 to 0-3, the goal scored by Eoin
Cummins. The boys started the second half well with two good
points from Stephen Morgan. However we conceded two late goals to
lose a very exciting game, 2-5 to 2-9. Best for Nemo were Darra
Mehigan, Ciaran McGrath, Robbie O'Sullivan, Roy Heaphy and
Stephen Morgan. Also the Under 15s bounced back to winning form
again against Blarney. All players played well.

DOUGLAS HALL AFC
The weekend saw a return to action for a number
of club teams, with the remainder facing fixtures next weekend.
The 14's travelled successfully to Wicklow for the National Cup,
while the Seniors, MSL Juniors and Youths were all winners in
their league matches.
The Seniors' league campaign picked up where they left off,
recording an uninspiring 3-1 win over Casement Celtic. The
scorers were John Healy (2) and Brian McSweeney. Despite winning
the match, an improvement in form will be needed in forthcoming
league matches.
The MSL Juniors were also on the winning trail, with a 2-1 win
over Crofton Celtic. Brian Foley was the 'Hall scorer, notching a
fine brace. Honourable mention to Colm Lyons, who performed
heroics in goals, keeping a clean sheet, until he was needed to
shore up the defence, following an injury.
The AUL Juniors were also involved in a league match. They
travelled to Harp Utd., and returned with a share of the spoils,
following a 2-2 draw. The scorers were Brendan Crown and Stephen
Carroll.
The Youths, whose season has been very interrupted, were victors
in their league clash with Midleton. The final score was 5-2, a
true reflection of the 'Hall superiority. The scorers were
Derrick Bowen, with a fine hat-trick; James O'Leary and Paul Rose.
In the Under 15 Local Cup Quarter Final, the 'Hall were most
unfortunate to suffer a 1-0 extra time defeat against Ringmahon
Rangers. The goal was scored in the second period of extra time,
when Ringmahon finished a rebound from Colin Doyle's excellent
penalty save. Indeed, the 'Hall had more than held their own
during the match with Kevin O'Sullivan, Sean O'Connor and Seamus
Long particularly prominent.
The Under 14's made the long journey to Wicklow to play St.
Maelruans in the National Cup and were deserving 2-0 winners. The
scorers were David O'Connell from a penalty and Gordon O'Donovan.
Stephen Bermingham was very sound in goals, recording another
clean sheet. They must now travel to play Quarryvale in Dublin,
in what will be a major test of the side.
Youths Cup Quarter Final
Next Sunday sees one of the biggest matches for years in
Moneygourney. The Youths host last season's runners up, Peake
Villa, in the Quarter Final of this season's competition. The
Tipperary visitors have impressive credentials and they will
stretch our lads to the limit. However, the 'Hall have been
performing well, and will not lack for motivation from C.J.
Harrington and Andrew Fealy. We hope to see a sizeable crowd in
Moneygourney - a big local support on the sideline could mean the
difference between winning and losing. Good luck on Sunday, lads!
DOUGLAS GAA STREET LEAGUES
A short note this week. Registration has taken place for this year's outdoor season. Over 250 young participants, aged between six and ten, have enlisted. Activities will recommence on Saturday the 7th of April at 10.00am where football will take centre stage. We look forward to exciting matches and the continued support of parents, organisers and sponsors.
