DOUGLAS GAA SENIOR

Never Say Die Attitude Helps Douglas Win County Title.
Douglas and Ballincollig faced each other in the Premier Grade U-16
County Final. These sides have met several times over the years
where only the kick of a ball seperated the teams.
In the early stages it was Douglas who dominated play but failed
to convert their advantage into scores. Mid way through the first
half the sides were level on three points each with Ballincollig
taking the initiative, forcing Douglas to struggle and leading at
the break by a point.
From the restart, Ballincollig continued where they left off,
scoring 1-3 in the first four minutes without reply. Douglas
looked to be out of this encounter and as a mentor it was looking
like game set and match for Ballincollig. But the Douglas lads
had different ideas, picking off a series of well taken points to
claw their way back into contention. Paddy White was to hit the
crossbar but this didn’t dishearten the Douglas lads who
kept plugging away while the defence grew in confidence. Eoin
Cadogan won some vital balls as Frank Tobin proved too much of a
handful for his marker. Kevin Mulcahy made some vital runs while
Mark Harrington caused havoc for the Ballincollig defence. Level
with five minutes remaining, Ballincollig were to score two
points and it looked over but again Douglas refused to concede as
Mark Harrington slotted two over the bar to level things once
again. Then up stepped Kevin Mulcahy to give Douglas the lead and
an unbelievable win on a scoreline of 0-14 to 1-10.
This was a text book game of Heart, NOT giving up (a shame it
wasn’t captured on film for all to see at the club as an
example to all teams both young and old) and self belief. As a
mentor I have been involved in many successes but this one ranks
as one of the greatest. A tinge of sympathy must be felt for
Ballincollig who gave their all and in defeat were most sporting
both on the field and on the line.
This win has also created a bit of history for other reasons in
that when in 1982 when Douglas last won this trophy Tom O’Sullivan
was a selector and his grandson, David Dorney is the steadfast
goal keeper this tome around. David O’Regan, left corner
forward in the recent success also had an uncle on the ’82
team.
Since 1997 the success of the club has seen nothing short of
continuity and reads as follows 9, A Grade County Titles from 12
yrs to 16 yrs, 1, B Grade Title, 7, A Grade City Championships as
well as a City Minor A League for the first time in the clubs
history while at adult level the hurlers and footballers have won
two county titles. It is important to document these successes
while at the same time the club cannot sit on its laurels but as
it is the end of season it is nice to look back at the seasons
high points and take pride in what has been achieved.
DOUGLAS GAA UNDERAGE

Douglas Capture Under 12 Title.
Douglas won their first Under 12 City League Final last weekend
by defeating Carrigaline by a single point. They produced a
display of intelligent football in a thrilling game played by two
very good teams. Both sides were very slow to settle but it was
Douglas who scored a goal after ten minutes from the boot of
James O’Sullivan. Our back line was playing very well with
Stephen O’Connor at half back giving nothing away.
Carrigaline tried to take the game to Douglas but our centre
field pairing Theo Cullane and Gavin Dempsey were making sure
that our forwards were getting plenty of ball. Seif Ulladh had
our first point which Carrigaline soon tallied. Connor Lucey put
Douglas further ahead with a fine point to leave the scores 1-02
to 0-2 at half time. The second half got off to a slow start with
Douglas squandering a lot of chances. Carrigaline were really up
for this game in the second half but Douglas were having nothing
of it. Carrigaline did manage to score two points to leave a
point in it with five minutes to go. It was anyone’s game at
this stage as tensions were rising between the supporters on both
sides. But it was Douglas who came out on top with a one point
victory over a gallant Carrigaline team. I mentioned a few
players but to be fair it was overall a great team performance.
Well done to Kevin, Tim, Colm, Tim Hickey and Maurice.
Under 11 City League Final.
Next Saturday December 8th is a big day for our Under 11
Footballers. They play St. Vincents in the City Final at
Bishopstown at 12.30pm. Having already defeated Mayfield, Nemo
and St. Michaels en route to the final. Hopes are high that they
will end the season in victory, all supported will be greatly
appreciated.
Club Personality -Jack Mac Sweeney.
Like Joe O’Reilly, Jack is another who gave valuable service
to the under age section of the club in the early years. Jack has
served the club as Club Chairman, vice chairman and hon.
Treasurer and was a selector of the junior hurling team of 1966,
who won the championship. A gifted man with his hands, “Sweeney”
did trojan for the club in Douglas over many years.
Congratulations to the Under 16 Footballers who won the Premier
County Final last weekend by defeating Ballincollig in a thriller.

SUNDAYS WELL RUGBY CLUB
Results for last weekend 1/12/’01
Under 18’s travelled to Kanturk for their league tie. 60 to
5 was the result for Sundays Well.
Under 16’s match against Fermoy was postponed while the
Under 13’s travelled to play Rockwell and scored a draw.
Fixtures for next weekend 8/12/’01
Under 18’s play Muskerry at the Farm in a league game. Kick
Off 11.30am.
Under 16’s are away to Dolphin in a friendly on Saturday
morning, Kick off 11.45.
Under 12A/12B/13’s and 14’s are all training on
Saturday morning 10am to 12pm.
Under 8’s/9’s/10’s and 11’s play Cork Con at
Temple Hill in a series of friendly matches, kick off 11a.m.
DOUGLAS RUGBY CLUB

Just a little note of thanks this week to all our sponsors and
those people who made the Race Night a very enjoyable night.
Now back to our big Kelly Cup game against Kanturk last Sunday.
Another magnificent day giving rise to a great game overall. The
Douglas Junior 2 side suffered (to say the least) a few defeats
in the previous weeks but as you all know, Cup games can be
different. The front row with Martin Pinfield, Sean O’Boyle
and Jonathan Payne were leading the way while man of the match,
Craig Fehilly was on fire again this week. Our backs this week,
led by Ray Purcell had a massive game helped along by the “Quiet
Man”, Leon”Lap” Rowley. Cian O’Brien and
Nathan were very solid on both wings, overall a huge improvement
so lets keep it going for another while.

AVONDALE UNITED FC
U11: Avondale Utd 6 – 1 Leeds
Avondale had a comfortable win over Leeds with goals from Edward
Noonan (2), Stephen McCarthy, Pat McCarthy, Kevin Harte and Barry
Sheehan and a very solid display from goalkeeper Ian Ring.
U14: Rockmount 2 – 3 Avondale Utd.
Rockmount were in front 2 – 1 at half time. But Avondale put
in a tremendous second half display to overturn the deficit and
run out deserved 3 – 2 winners. The goal scorers were
Dominic McHale (2) and Eoin O’Brien. Best for Avondale were
goalkeeper Emmett O’Neill, Jason Mahon in defence and Kevin
Murphy in midfield.
FAI Youth Cup: Avondale Utd. 3 – 1 Leeds
Avondale advanced to a 4th round meeting with Cork City in the
FAI Youth Cup thanks to a 3 – 1 victory over Leeds. The
scorers for Avondale were Keith Mullins, Ronan Byrnes and Gary O’Donovan.
Mark Nolan was on target for Leeds.
Juniors: Avondale Utd. 1 – 1 Bandon
Avondale shared the points with Bandon as Stephen O’Sullivan
cancelled out John O’Regan’s penalty for Bandon.
Munster Senior Cup: Temple Utd. 3 – 1 Avondale Utd.
A stronger finishing Temple side ended Avondale’s
involvement in this season’s Munster Senior Cup. Trailing 1-
0 at half time, Niall Reddy’s goal brought Avondale back
into the game early in the second half. However, Temple knocked
in two goals late in the game to advance.

CARRIGALINE BADMINTON CLUB
The annual Christmas party will be held on Saturday 15th Dec at
Fern Hill Golf Club. All members and guests are welcome. The
evening starts at 8pm, with a 4-course meal followed by music and
dance. Last years party was a great success (Wilton with his
trousers rolled up doing a Morris dance was particularly
memorable) so please add your name to the list on the notice
board if you wish to attend.
The Cork County team travelled to the University of Limerick last
weekend for the Butterfield cup and won for the second year
running. Well done Cork. Playing from CBC were Shane Thompson,
Laura Thompson, Graham Tierney, Declan Brown, Karen Cinnamond,
Mairead Ni Bheara and Tony O'Sullivan.
Laura Thompson, Tony O'Sullivan and Caroline Hayes travelled to
Whitehall Rd, Dublin for the All Ireland U17 Championships. Laura
reached the doubles and mixed finals, Tony was runner up in the
doubles finals and Caroline reached the doubles semi-finals.
In the league and cup matches, Div 1 met Melbourne away and lost
3-2. The team: David Thompson, Adrian Furey, Graham Tierney,
Karen Cinnamond, Mairead Ni Bheara.
Div 3 ladies beat Garyduff at home 4-0 in a close match. The team:
Idoia Murphy, Laura Kilkenny, Judy Barrett, Geraldine O'Donovan.
I was very upset to hear that there would be no Div 3 Men's team
for me to write about this season, but I shall be keeping a close
eye on the Div 3 Mixed team. They were beaten by Clonakilty 4-3
away, beat Bandon at home 5-2 and beat Blackrock by 1 set at home
in the cup. The team: Billy Cantwell, Tony O'Loughlin, Kah Leong,
Ron Thompson (hi Ron), Idoia Murphy, Laura Kilkenny, Judy
Barrett, Joe Fitzgerald.
Div 4 Mixed beat Riverstown 4-2 away in the Cup and is now into
the semi-final. The team: Kah Leong, Joe Angelini, Wilton Flynn,
Ann Angelini, Liz McLaren, Geraldine O'Donovan.
Div 5 mixed beat Pfizers and Centenary in the league and also
beat UCC in the Cup. The team: Paul Harrington, Dermot Lucey,
Gerry Hennessy, Phil McCarthy, Bernadette Barry, Bernie Hayes.
Div 6 Mixed lost to Garyduff and CIT in the league. The team:
Liam Buckley, Neil Perkiss, Liam Clinton, Padraig Moran, Heather
Hegarty, Tina O'Sullivan, Mairead Heart, Ursula Norris, Deirdre
O'Donovan
Div 6 Men's team beat Blackrock and lost to Mitchelstown at home.
The team: Neill Perkiss, Arjan Toebes, John Doran, Mark Rhys-Davies,
Padraig Moran, Liam Buckley.
Novice Ladies beat Riverstown at home on points and Pfizers Away
4-0. The team: Ann Toebes, Judy Perkiss, Josephine Hickey, Ann
Doran, Miriam Walsh, Denise Phelan.

DOUGLAS HALL AFC
Last weekend brought a share of mixed results,
with particular disappointment at the Seniors exit from the
Intermediate Cup. The MSL Juniors built on recent good results,
while the Under 15's, 13's and 11's recorded victories.
The Seniors travelled with hopes high, to take on Rockmount in
Whitechurch in the FAI Intermediate Cup. Honours were even in the
first half, with the 'Hall competing very well with Rockmount
throughout the pitch. The second half saw the Douglas defence put
under even more pressure with Rockmount driving forward at every
opportunity. The 'Hall defence coped well with all Rockmount
could throw at them, with staunch defending from Alan Bateman and
Dave Keating in particular. Midway through the half, Rockmount
made the vital break through following a swift counter attack.
The 'Hall threw caution to the wind and paid the penalty, when
Rockmount scored a second goal with virtually the last kick of
the game. The 'Hall must now pick themselves up for a really
important league fixture next Sunday away to Temple Utd.
The MSL Juniors, playing with a good deal more confidence at the
moment recorded a good 2-1 win in the league against Wilton Utd.
The scorer of both 'Hall goals was Stuart Howard and this drove
the 'Hall to a well deserved three points. The Under 17s
travelled to Lakewood Athletic and were pegged back very late on
for a 4-4 draw. Leading 4-3 with time almost up, a poor defensive
goal led to the Lakewood equaliser. The 'Hall scorers in a ding
dong match were Gavin Draper, with a super hat-trick and Niall
Crowley.
The Under 15 Premier side were put to the pin of their collars to
advance
3-2 against Lakewood Athletic in the Evans Cup. The scorers were
Ian Shortland, David Hackett and David O'Connell (penalty). This
was a difficult tie for the 'Hall, but even so, an improvement in
this form will be needed for further progress in the Cup. The
Under 15 Division 1 side suffered a very disappointing 3-2 defeat
against Blarney Utd. in the league. Following a great opening,
the 'Hall led 2-0, but conceded three bad goals to go down. The
scorers were Conor Stanley and David Fitzgerald, who struck a gem
from 25 yards.
The under 13's showed great resilience and battling qualities
when they advanced in the Troy Cup with a 1-0 win over Maymount
Celtic. The scorer was Eoin O'Leary, while John Harris kept a
fine goal for a clean sheet.
The Under 11's fulfilled the promise they showed in their
previous couple of matches, recording their first ever victory.
The league match was against Douglas Corinthians and the 'Hall
emerged with a deserved 3-2 win. The scores were Thomas Dynan (2)
and Richard Martin. Congratulations to
all concerned on breaking their "duck"!
