COLLEGE CORINTHIANS AFC

There was a lovely family atmosphere in Corinthians Park last Sunday for the finals of the Club’s annual Street Leagues. A huge crowd turned up to see what is always the highlight of the Corinthian’s Schoolboy season. Played on a World Cup format this years league has been running since early April, catering for some 28 teams and 350 schoolboys, between the ages of 6 and 11. Sunday’s action included some 14 different finals, as well as the obligatory penalty competitions.
Under Seven
Saudi Arabia 2 - USA 1
The Under 7 Cup final provided some fine entertainment with two well matched sides giving their all in search of victory. Saudi Arabia with goals by Peter Barry and Richard Sweetman raced into an early lead, but the USA with David Twomey, Peter O’Brien and Alex Hurley to the fore fought back well and reduced the deficit early in the second half. However despite continual pressure they could not find an equaliser and Saudi Arabia hung on to take the cup. The other successful teams in the Under Seven finals were Ireland, Captained by James O’Shea; Senegal, Captained by Conor Horgan; Brazil, Captained by Peter Mullane and Portugal, Captained by Eoin O’Connell.
Under Eight
Japan 1 - Tunisia 0
Another close fought encounter with just a single goal separating the two sides. The vital goal came just before half time when Gordon Joyce scored from close range. Captain Evan Browne, James Tyner, Nicholas Burnsand Stephen Devine did well for Japan, while for Tunisia, the gallant losers, David Barry, Aidan Finn, Rory Burke and Peter Hurley did well. In the other Under Eight finals Denmark, skippered by Jack Buckley defeated Belgium and Uruguay led by Luke O’Sullivan defeated Sweden.
Under Nine
France 2 - South Korea 0
France created a mild surprise in the Under Nine final when they proved too strong for South Korea winning by 2-0. David Ring was the hero for France, scoring twice and he received great support from John Daly, James Furlong, Cian McWhinney and Niall Kelleher. For South Korea, who gave their all, Eoin O’Meara, Luke Connolly, Ian James, Ian Harte and David Abbot turned in fine performances. Mexico, Captained by Gary Perrot and Paraguay, led by David Hanrahan were the other Under Nine winners.
Under Nine
Italy 1 - Nigeria 0
The Under Eleven final was a real competitive affair with the games swinging from end to end. The vital breakthrough came when Italy were awarded a penalty and Eoin O’Shaughnessy kept his composure to score from the resulting penalty kick. Michael Lyons, Michael Reidy, Jason Murphy and Michael Corkery were superb for Italy, while for Nigeria, Peter Coughlan, David Nation, Rory Burns and Denzel Beechinor did well. Cameroon, skippered by Gary Duggan and Spain, captained by Tom Kelleher were the other winners on the day.

Special Thanks
On behalf of the Club I would like to thank all the coaches who helped to organise the leagues for the past two months. Thanks also to Sheila Goode and Sheila Cahalane, who helped with the administration throughout the year and to Ger Kilcummins, who organised everything bar the weather for last Sunday.
Schoolboys League
Our U14 and U15 sides are still very much involved in Premier League action and they picked up some valuable league points over the past week. Our U15’s made it three league wins in a row when they just got the better of Lakewood in a seven goal thriller. Goals by Aaron O’Callaghan, Aaron Kearney, James Kenny and Denis O’Mahony just proved too much for Lakewood . Our U14’s were also in good form as they got the better of Kilreen on a 3-1 score line. With three games left in the U14 league they are still unbeaten and are very much in the running for the League title.

DOUGLAS GAA SENIOR SECTION

by Pat Harrington
Douglas faced East Cork side, St. Catherine’s in the third round of the Senior Hurling Championship. St. Catherine’s got off to the best possible start scoring a goal in the first few minutes. Douglas settled down with Cormac Dineen playing very well at centre back. As the half wore on Douglas grew in confidence. Ronan Wade got on top at full back as Gary Wade was beginning to make an impact at centre forward. The East Cork lads led 1-6 to 0 -5 at the break.
Fergal Hayes gave Douglas a great boost when he goaled soon after the interval. The remainder of the second half was played out between the free takers on either side. The game was deep into injury time when Douglas were awarded a free 60 metres out - up stepped goalkeeper, Teddy O'Donovan and drove the ball into the Castlelyons goalmouth, the ball deflected off the full backs stick (Teddy's words) and into the net. Douglas were a point ahead - unbelievable a quick puck out by Teddy resulted in another score - Final whistle Douglas 2-9 St. Catherine’s 1-10. This was a badly needed victory for Douglas hurlers and now they go on to meet either Castlelyons or Avondhu on the 13th of July. Well done to all concerned. An important boost for douglas Hurling.
Junior B Hurling .
Douglas competed in two games during the week. The opening game was against Ballinure who led at the 1-3 to 1-1 at the break. The sides finished level after a most entertaining game on a scoreline of 2-7 to 1-10.
Ronan Geary got the equalizing point – a fine effort. Jim Barry, Ronan Geary and John McCarthy played well.
The second game was against Blackrock. This was a strong Blackrock outfit. Douglas really didn’t compete in this game, duly paid the price and were well beaten. David Dwyer, Richie Butler and Alan White played well.
Minor Non Exam Hurling.
Douglas will play Glen Rovers or Ballinhassig in this Final.
Minor Football Championship.
The dates for the Premier Football Championship have been finalised – the quarter final is against Bishopstown on 6th of July and if successful the semi-final is on the 13th of July.

DOUGLAS CAMOGIE CLUB

(This is a bit long on account of being left out for two weeks, and they are now in the All Ireland Finals )
Under 14A league final 2002
Another successful week for Douglas camogie club with a 14a league title and a victory for our under 11 and 12 teams.
Douglas under 14 team got their Feile week off to a great start with a brilliant victory over Ballygarvan in the under 14a league final. The game started with Ballygarvan scoring an early goal against a very hesitant Douglas defense. Douglas then got on the scoreboard with sharpshooter Jenny O’Donovan scoring 4 brilliant points from frees and play. A goal from Sorcha Ni Riann left the score at half time 1-4 to 1-2 in favor of Douglas. The second half was top class with both teams giving they’re all. Ballygarvan led on a couple of occasions only to be pegged back by Douglas. Ten minutes to go Ballygarvan led by a goal, but Douglas really turned on the style in the last 10 min’s to totally dominate the game goals from Jenny O’Donovan, Olivia Tobin a wonderful effort by Emma Heffernan sealed a marvelous victory for Douglas.
Outstanding for Douglas were Aishling Barrett, Sarah O’Regan, Lynda Mc’Carthy. Deirdre Murphy and Jenny O’Donovan. They have now completed their Cork season unbeaten and can now look forward to the all Ireland Feile in Armagh with great confidence. Well done girls.
Under 12 league

Cork Feile NA Gael champions 2002
Cork Feile NA Gael champions 2002 that was the title bestowed on Douglas camogie club last Thursday week. It was a historical first title victory over a gallant Ballygarvan team. It was a fantastic team effort by all concerned in were the team played 5 matchs in 9 days 2on the same night overcoming Carrigaline and Ballinhassig to qualify for the quarterfinal. They played Glen Rovers in what was a very physical battle. Douglas were up at half time by 1-3 –0-0 having played with the wind. Playing against the wind in the second half they played with great courage and commitment to win on a score line of 1-5 –0.3.In the semi-final they traveled to Ballincollig to play the local girls .The Douglas team despite the efforts of the previous night were not prepared to let the opportunity to reach their first Feile final to slip. They truly turned on the style to win on a score line of 5-10 to 0-1.News soon came true that our local neighbours and great rivals Ballygarvan had also qualified for the final so roll on Thursday night. The final was played on a splendid Barrs pitch .The game was a great advertisement for under age camogie in Cork. Ballygarvan started the game in a very determined fashion and had a very tired looking Douglas team under great pressure . Ballygarvan opened the scoring with a point. The Douglas girls started getting into their stride and into the game more. Scores coming from Jenny O’ Donovan, Deirdre Murphy, Katherine Hussey, Olivia Tobin and Lavinia O’Mahony had Douglas leading by 3-3 to 0-1 with the first half nearing the end. A goal from Ballygarvan on half time left the score line 3-to 1-1 at half time in favour of Douglas.
The second half started with the game going from end to end. Ballygarvan now playing with Great Spirit really came at Douglas but the Douglas backs were giving nothing away. Douglas scored a point to lead 3-4 to 1-1 with 10 mins left. Ballygarvan now on top against a visible tiring Douglas team scored 2-1 to really set the game up for a grand finish. The Douglas girls sensing the danger put in one last effort to hold Ballygarvan at bay and were delighted to hear the final whistle. The cup was presented to Captain Audrey Flanagan on behalf of her fantastic team. Well done to both teams for a wonderful final and best of luck to Douglas who travel to Antrim to represent Cork in the all Ireland Feile finals. Well done girls.
We would like to thank everyone who supported us in our fund raising it was greatly appreciated. THANK YOU.
