DOUGLAS CREDIT UNION GAA STREET LEAGUES

Garry White.
FRIDAY 15TH NOVEMBER 2002.
Numbers attending were down on previous weeks, however lets not detract from the wonderful fare that was on display. The U-7 children are in the spotlight this week providing observers with some brillant football for ones so young.Mayo's Mr Consistency Cian Murphy was ably assisted by James O Flynn and Conor Flanagan, while the lung bursting efforts of Charlie White, Ryan McCarthy, and Kian Davis enhanced Meath's cause.Wexford's heroes were Conor Casey who scored a memorable goal through a crowd of players, while their defence was well marshalled by sturdy Ronan Heelan.Jordan Kavanagh was very alert in the Antrim goal with John Moynihan busy in midfield.Kingpins for Carlow were Kieran Sheehan and the tidy Sean Walsh, where Kerry were well served by goal poacher Adam McSweeney and midfield dynamo Don O Mahony.

DOUGLAS HALL LADIES AFC

Douglas Hall 4 – Lakewood 0

Douglas Hall seniors traveled to the away side Lakewood, to play what they knew would be a hard game. Douglas Hall had to battle to keep Lakewood out of the defense. Midfield battled hard, with both left and right wing Caroline and Louse working very hard with some beautiful runs. One wish resulted in the first goal from Ashling. An excellent run by Louise Martin and a beautiful cross into the box lined Ashling up to score her first of two goals. The second half was a hard as the first, the Douglas Hall girls seemed to settle more on the ball and the passing started to pay off. Caroline followed in Ashlings lead and scored two of her own. Douglas Hall won well in the end but had to battle hard to set the result. A very good team performance over all.
Douglas Hall Under 14’s
With the league already won it was time for the Douglas Girls to concentrate on the cup. In the first round this weekend they took on Wilton FC. Douglas were always fancied to beat this side but, Wilton kept them scoreless until 5 minutes before half time when Sarah Walshe scored directly from a free kick. 2 minutes later Karen O’Neill added a second to put Douglas in control. Ciara Barry played very well at centre back clearing any ball that came past the midfield. In the second half Douglas dominated with another 4 goals. 2 more for Sarah Walshe, I more for Karen O’Neill and 1 for Suzy Herbert. Emma Buckley and Kate O’Dowling came on early in the second half and both played very well. Emma being solid at right back and Kate battling well up front. In fact she laid of a lovely ball to Suzy Herbert for the 6th Goal. Jessica O’Leary and Stephanie Davis were also impressive when they came on. With all these young girls coming on and doing so well it means that we should have a strong team again for next year.
We play Wilton Utd in the next round of the cup next Saturday. Good Luck Girls.

TRAMORE ATHLETIC AFC

By Sandra O'Rourke
Under 12's Cup Match Tramore Ath. 3 - Douglas Corinthians 0
Our Under 12 team had a solid 3-0 win over Douglas Corinthians last weekend. Due to weather conditions Tramore have been inactive for 5 weeks and the layoff was apparent to all. A lack lustre first half left Tramore Ath. a goal to the good scored by Troy O'Mahoney. Upping the tempo in the second half Tramore extended their lead through Liam Doyle immediately after the resumption. Michael Deasy put the game beyond doubt midway through the second half. Best for Tramore on the day were Jason Conroy, David Collins and Padraig Murphy.
Under 14's Lakewood 7 - Tramore Ath. 0
Tramore Ath. were outplayed by a very strong and talented Lakewood team at Ovens last weekend. Tramore started well and urged on by Jacks Cairns and Daniel Pepper they battled hard to maintain equality. Lakewood however broke the deadlock midway through the first half and led by 3 goals at half time. Try as they might in the second half Tramore could not get back into the game and conceded 4 more goals.Best for Tramore on the day were Sean Plaice and Jack Cairns.
Under 16's Cup Greenwood 2 - Tramore Ath. 1
Despite taking an early lead through a goal from Paul Kerrigan Tramore left Coffeys Field empty handed last weekend. It was a below par performance from the Tramore Lads who struggled to hit the form that they have shown this season. Greenwood levelled midway through the first half and the winning goal came at the stroke of full time.
Best for Tramore on the day were Shane Finn, Ken Murphy and Paul Kerrigan.

DOUGLAS RUGBY CLUB

In very windy conditions, the teams were close enough during the first half, with Douglas leading 17-3 at the interval.Douglas maintained the pressure in the second half and in a superb performance form the entire squad romped home winners by 48 - 3. Douglas ran over 8 tries in total with Enda O'Mahony scoring a hat trick and captain Conor Tolan, Anthony Costelloo, Alan Lyne, Dave O'Callaghan and Eamon Kinahane contributing a try apiece. Colin Corkery kicked two penalties and a coversion.
Sun 17th Nov: First team played Waterford City in the Junior 1 League and romped home 48 to 12, putting us into first position in the League. A Hat Trick by Tim Hennessy and tries from John Hayes ( Man of the Match ), Colin Corkery (2), Noel Swanton and Eoin Mullowney sealed the game with Colin Corkery adding 8 pts. from kicks.
Second team went down to Cork Co. in the J2 League by 27 to 5, a reflection of an uncharacteristic Douglas display with Con making the most of their opportunities and a bit relieved to get the points. A bit of work
to be done yet by Douglas.
Next week sees a crunch J1 tie with Douglas travelling to Old Christians for what will be a crucial game for both sides. With former Douglas Coach, Mattie Marnell now coaching Christians, it will be interesting to see what he gleaned from yesterday's display. Either way, this fixture could well be a determining result in the end of season promotional shakedown.

DOUGLAS GAA SENIOR SECTION

DOUGLAS MINOR FOOTBALLERS WIN INAUGURAL SHIELD
Report by Pat Harrington

Douglas minor premier footballers travelled to Ballinlough to play St. Finbarr’s in the shield final. From the throw-in Douglas were in a very determined mood and this was reflected in the way they approached the game. From No.1 to 15 Douglas were in total command in all departments. Mark Harrington goaled after a mistake by the ‘Barr’s goalkeeper, and Paddy White had a goal following a sweeping move.
St. controlled the opening ten minutes of the second half kicking three unanswered points, and should have had a goal. Paddy White proceeded to shoot four points on the trot for Douglas, followed by a Neil Heffernan goal – contest over. David O’Connor and Jonathan Lane were commanding figures in the full back line.
Overall one would have to say this was a very focused, imaginative and workmanlike display by Douglas. It was a just reward for the players and mentors for the time and effort put in during the year. The opposition did not measure up on the day; Douglas will have stiffer opposition when they play O’Donovan Rossa in the County Football League final 2000 next weekend – venue and time to be decided. Check club noticeboard for details.
JUNIOR 3 FOOTBALL LEAGUE FINAL
Douglas faced Nemo Rangers in this league final. The South Douglas side were out of the blocks quickly and led by 0 – 4 to 0 – 0 after twenty-five minutes. A goal from Robert Collins just before the break and suddenly Douglas were back in the game with the sides level, 0 – 4 to 1 – 1 at half time.
Nemo’s experience told in the second half. A second goal from John Kenneally gave us some hope but overall Douglas struggled up front and Nemo ran out winners on a scoreline of 1 – 10 to 2 – 3. Alan White and Don McSweeney were outstanding on the day. We wish a speedy recovery to Ronan Geary who was injured during the course of the game.
MINOR “A” FOOTBALL
In this play-off with Valley’s the southeast side were in total control early on. Then a superb Denis O’Riordan goal changed the complexion of the game. Four points separated the teams coming up to the break. A Douglas goal was disallowed on the stroke of half time.
Valleys were much more economical with the use of the ball in the second half. Many of the Douglas moves were cancelled out by the opposition, as Valleys tacked on the points and finished convincing winners. Shane Forde was outstanding in goal for Douglas. David O’Sullivan, Brian T. O’Callaghan and Gary Drennan were others to impress whilst Niall Crowley was very industrious up Front.
We send our heartiest congratulations to Ballinhassig on their great success in the junior hurling county championship.
Our sincere condolences go out to Myra Corbett on the death of her sister, Mrs. Moore and to Mrs. Eileen Dennehy and family on the death of Paddy, a longstanding and esteemed member of our club. May they rest in peace.

DOUGLAS GAA UNDERAGE

U/11 South East Football Final Douglas 9-7 Ballinhassig 1-2
Douglas got off to a great start and scored three early goals. They continued to dominate and led 6-5 to 0-2 at half time. In the second half Douglas continued to play great football with players passing the ball and running on for the return. James Cantwell played a captain’s part while Sean Kearney, Max McGrath and Stephen O’Sullivan were outstanding on the day.
U/13 Football Championship Semi Final
Douglas 1-5 St. Michael’s 1-10
St. Michaels were well in control in the first half scoring some fine points to lead 0-8 to no score at halftime. A goal by Brian O’Callaghan and a few frees by Michael Doody brought Douglas back into it but St. Michaels again took control and but for some fine saves by Eoin Hickey the winning margin would have been greater.
Fixtures:
U/12 Football League
Douglas (2) v St.Finbarrs (1) 12a.m. Sunday Home

The Underage Committee wish to sympathise with the Dennehy family on the death of Paddy Dennehy who was a club member for many years.

DOUGLAS HALL AFC

Following a number of weeks of inactivity because of the weather, it was great to see a full programme of matches last weekend. However, results were very mixed, possibly due to "rustiness" in some teams. The Seniors travelled to College Corinthians for a very difficult league assignment. So it proved, with Corinthians emerging 3-1 winners. The 'Hall competed well for long spells, but John Aherne's goal was not enough.
The MSL Juniors were also in action away to Corinthians and emerged with a 2-2 draw. The scorers were Martin Davies and Brian McSweeney. This side is maintaining its good form and will need to be in tip top shape for next Sunday's visit to Clonakilty in the FAI Junior Cup.
The AUL Juniors hosted Kinsale inthe Munster Junior Cup. This was a well-fought tie, with Kinsale emerging as 2-1 winners. The 'Hall scorer was Brendan Crowne.
In the Munster Youths Cup, the 'Hall travelled to Crosshaven and were fully deserving 3-1 winners. Stephen Barry was the man in form, notching a fine hat-trick. This gives the Youths a home tie against Richmond in the next round.
The Under 16 Premier side, following a long break, returned to Local Cup action with a 7-1 win over Glanworth. Scorers for the 'Hall here were David Hackett and Brian Spillane with 2 each; Wesley O'Connell, Alan O'Donovan and Jonathon Lane.
Also in the Under 16 Local Cup, the Division 1 side had a 3-1 victory over Dripsey Celtic. The scorers were Pat Walsh with 2 and David Fitzgerald. This was not a particularly good performance, but the side did enough to progress.
The Under 14's came a cropper against Midleton in the League, going down 5-0 in a very below par display. This side never got going and Midleton punished every mistake.
The Under 12's travelled to Mitchelstown and found the bigger home side too hot to handle. Again, our side suffered a heavy defeat, 6-0, but the players will have learned a valuable lesson.
We would like to express our sympathies to the entire extended Dennehy family on the death of Paddy at the weekend. Ar Dheis go raibh a anam.
Fixtures: Saturday: AUL Junior League Away v. Albert Rovers, 2.00
Under 17 League Away v. Knockavilla, 2.00
Under 11 Local cup Away v. Springfield, 11.00
Sunday: Senior League Home v. Castleview, 10.45

DOUGLAS CAMOGIE CLUB

Douglas camogie clubs incredible success story continued at the weekend with the clubs 2 under 13 teams winning the Seandun A and B league. The 13A team won it at the expense of their North side rivals Glen Rovers. Played in ideal conditions last Saturday morning much was expected of these girls having already beaten the Glen in the league. The game started with the Douglas girls in no mood to let the Glen get any grip of the game and 2 superbly taken goals by Sinead O’Leary one from a brilliant cross field pass from an impressive Leanne O’Shea. An early injury to midfield player Rachel O’Sullivan a switch with corner forward Niamh O’Donovan. Now we had Niamh with her midfield partner Hilary O’Connor taking complete control in this area. Douglas led at half time on a score line of 4-1 to 0-0.Douglas played outstanding camogie in the second half scoring a further 3-2 holding Glen Rovers scoreless in 2 games tells it’s own story on how the Douglas backline played. Over all an excellent team performance with special mention of Sinead O’Leary and Niamh O’Donovan who scored 3 goals each. Hillary O’Connor at midfield and Lynda Mc’Carthy, Jessica Jackson and lastly Captain Eilish Desmond at full back. As captain Eilish accepted the shield on behalf of her team from Mary Newman representing the Seandun bord.
UNDER 13 B
This team played Brian Dillions. The game started with Brian Dillions scoring in the first 3 minutes but once our girls settled there was no holding back. Douglas played some great ground hurling and this paid off because the forwards got a plentiful supply of the ball and with 4 goals coming from Ashling Cotter 2 from Máire O’Mahony 1 from Jill Kelleher and another goal from either Gillian Murphy or Aideen Fitton I never found with all the excitement and a point from Julia White. Douglas came away winners on a score line of 8-1 to 0-0.All played brilliantly on the day but specially to Sarah Sisk who was given a job to do and did it brillantly. Captain Gillian Murphy accepted the shield on behalf of her team from Seandun Chairperson Marian Mc Carthy. WELL DONE TO BOTH TEAMS.
SEANDUN UNDER 10 INDOOR BLIZTS.
Douglas had 2 teams partaking in this event at the weekend in NA Piarsaigh complex. The both teams played 5 games. Both teams won 4 of these games and drawing 1. They played Brian Dillons, Bishopstown, Glenrovers, NA Pairsiagh and Blackrock in what was a very enjoyable afternoon’s camogie. The experience of playing these teams will stand to our girls in the future. So to all the girls well done.
