The Round Tower at Tullaherin

Stroan Fountain
Poem by Michael Holden

Duchas was founded in March 1981, in County Kilkenny, Ireland.

Its aims are to research and record the wealth of history and folklore of the Tullaherin area in order to foster among the people of the parish a greater interest in and awareness of their past.

During the summer months, tours are organised to sites of historical interest throughout the South-East, usually with guides with intimate local knowledge. Non-members are welcome.

The Society also organises a series of lectures during the winter months. Given by members or guest speakers, past evenings have explored such key issues as: the Great Famine in the locality; farm families and farming continuity; the archeological sites of Tullaherin.

The society has founded a bi-annual journal In the Shadow of the Steeple. Issues are available in all local bookshops, newagents and from this website.
