Éire Nua Building Fund
Belfast / Derry

Republican Sinn Féin has secured a premises at 229 Falls Road, Belfast as the organisation's public office in the city. This excellent location near the city centre will give a much-needed focus and morale boost to our growing membership in Belfast and throughout Ulster.

The initial cost of the office was £60,000 (punts) and since it was acquired major refurbishment has been carried out on the building. Added to that is the cost of security to protect it and those using it from the British Crown Forces, loyalist death squads and others who would threaten true Republicans. This, and currency fluctuations. have added another £15,000 (punts) to the cost.

Over £20,000 has been contributed to the fund to date and the committee is very grateful for the valuable support of members and supporters. The debt is now reduced to £50,932.

Contributions, which will be gratefully acknowledged, can be made:

  1. To the following: Mary Ward, Co Donegal; Frank McCarry, Co Antrim; Jimmy McElhinney, Co Tyrone; Geraldine Taylor, Belfast; Michael McGonigle, Co Derry; Joe O'Neill, Co Donegal; Mick McManus, Co Fermanagh; Larry McMahon, Co Monaghan

» ÉIRE NUA launch in Belfast An original and innovative plan to share power among national, provincial and local governments in Ireland was given its Belfast launch on August 8 last. PRISONERS

» Denial of political status: silence means approval Republican prisoner Tommy Crossan, Belfast, had his punishment hearing in front of the governor of Maghaberry prison, Co Antrim postponed from Monday, August 14 while he sought legal advice. The hearing was as a result of Tommy Crossan’s refusal to do prison work in his campaign for political status since his 10-year sentence for political offences on June 29 last. He has been on 23-hour lock-up since that date, only being allowed out of his cell for one hour every day . . .
» Street censorship serves only British interests On August 15 Republican Sinn Féin in Belfast issued the following statement: "Republican Sinn Féin through statements and posters have tried to highlight the loss of political status to Republican POWs charged or convicted after April/May 1998. New posters showing a Blanketman in the struggle for political status of 1976/81 and demanding the return of political status as a right for Republican POWs were posted in many areas of north and west Belfast. A number of these posters were posted along the Old Park Road in the Rosapenna Street area and in a number of other streets in the Bone. These were removed not by children or the British Crown forces but by a number of people well known in this area because of their own political affiliation; these people were witnessed removing these political status posters . . .

Bundoran hunger strike commemoration 2000

» Bundoran A large crowd of people and two marching bands took part in the 19th annual H-Block commemoration of the Hunger Strikes by Republican political prisoners in Bundoran on Saturday, August 26. In particular the Co Donegal rally, held in August every year since 1981, honoured the historic hunger strikes of 1980-81 during which ten Republican prisoners died to secure treatment as political prisoners. Guests of honour were the hunger strikers relatives, representing the Hursons, O’Hara, Lynch, Devine, McDonnell and Ward families. Apologies were received from the other hunger strike relatives who hoped that the parade would be a success . . .

Loyalist ‘common ground: attacking nationalists
Republican Sinn Féin in north Belfast in a statement on August 30 condemned the nightly sectarian attacks by loyalist gangs on nationalist homes at Wyndham Street.

"It comes as no surprise that these loyalists can attack nationalist areas at will, we have all been witness to loyalist paramilitaries taking over large parts of North and West Belfast," the statement said.

"We call on all nationalists to be vigilant, it is a fact that all loyalist paramilitary groups will find common ground in attacking nationalists, only through vigilance can every one stay safe. We would also ask that all such attacks are reported to the local Republican Sinn Féin," the statement concluded.

» Freedom to campaign politically? Following a concerted campaign of misrepresentation of Republican Sinn Féin’s position in sections of the media -- largely alleging that we are in alliance with other political bodies with which we have no connection -- 26-County Special Branch harassment has grown in intensity . . .
» Special Branch harass Limerick Republicans Sinn Féin Poblachtach in Limerick, in a statement, condemned the ongoing harassment of its members . . .
