The Volvo S70 is a very special car, perhaps mostly because it combines two apparently irreconcilable properties: it is one of the safest cars in the world, at the same time as being one of the most inspiring to drive. In fact, it actually unites the two. Because the very same characteristics that make it fun to drive - the low-rev acceleration, the stable roadholding, the predictable handling, the brakes for all surfaces - are the same things that give you greater safety margins out on the road. And, aware of its unsurpassed safety, you relax more when you drive - and then you enjoy your driving all the more.
The passenger compartment is surrounded by a robust safety cage which is reinforced with high-strength steel. The front and rear ends of the car are designed to crumple in a collision so that the force of the impact is reduced mildly but effectively. Longitudinal and transverse members combine to absorb and dissipate the impact in an offset collision, a serious type of accident in which only a small part of the front takes the full force. Reinforcements prevent the front wheels from penetrating the passenger compartment. ![]() |
