MountainSafety
I must remind you, never to go walking in the mountains alone, and always go with an experienced hillwalker or mountaineer. A good compass, map and map reading skills are essential. Emergency food supplies, good quality clothing are also a must. I recommend, if you are planning a walking trip in this area, that you purchase a proper walking guide and a good map (OSM) from selected bookshops or adventure sport outfitters.
1. To call for Mountain Rescue: Dial 999 and
ask for Mountain Rescue.
2. There is a stretcher kept in Binn Leitri Hostel - L777483.
3. Public Telephones are located at the following locations:
Leenane (Leenaun) Village: L878620
Leitir Fraic (Letterfrack): L710577
Binn Leitri Hostel: L777483
Joe Keane's Pub (An Maam): L966528
Peacock's Pub (Maam Cross): L977463
4.Mobile Telphones:
The mobile telephony service, both GSM and Analog, in the mountains of Connemara is not
very good. If you have a mobile phone, bring it with you for extra safety. However, do not
rely totally on it, as there are some areas where it is difficult to get a good signal and
many areas where there is no signal at all. A reasonable signal can be received on the
summit of the southern Maamturks and southern Twelve Bens.
